TRUTHINESS IN MUSICALS: I'll admit I haven't yet bought my tickets for Company, even if NPH as Bobby and Patti Lupone doing "Ladies Who Lunch" almost gets me there, but the announcement that Stephen Colbert will play Harry (singing parts of "Sorry-Grateful" and "Have I Got A Girl For You") and Anika Noni Rose (Wendy Scott-Carr!) will play Marta and get a crack at "Another Hundred People" almost gets me there. The big role not yet cast is Amy, who gets "Not Getting Married Today" (maybe the hardest song to sing in the score because of the rapid patter)--any suggestions for who they should go after?

The clear choice is Franco.
ReplyDeleteSimply hitting the "like" button here would not do justice to how hard I laughed when I read this comment.
ReplyDeleteIf Franco's not avail, his Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway would be great. And Lea Michele's probably off campaigning for it already (though I think she's all wrong for it, she seems to think she's right for everything)...
"Not Getting Married Today" is one of my favorite sondheim songs -- I have it memorized from working in tech on this show in college. It's a great song for someone like Chenoweth, who has the voice and comic chops, although she's probably too old for the role. But they may not be focused on age appropriate given the short run.
ReplyDeleteI really really really hope they are filming this and it will air on PBS or something. Because I can't come to New York in April. Sad face.
I know it would never happen for a million different reasons... but Emma Caulfield would be good. She was so good in "Once More, With Feeling" nearly (gulp) 10 years ago, and I remain baffled that she didn't have a notable post-Buffy career. (Having said that, I remain super-excited to see Company in April. The BF and I still need to finalize the travel plans - we should get on that - and figure out what other shows we'll be seeing while in NYC...)
ReplyDeleteChenoweth came to mind, but she may be too chirpy for Amy. I don't have a problem with age--she's 42, but can play younger. Amy should be around Bobby's age (35), so that should eliminate the Glee kids--if they were going with someone from Glee, Jayma Mays might work.
ReplyDeleteKathy Griffin.
ReplyDeleteI adore those Sondheim master class videos on youtube. Sondheim is exactly as ... exacting as you'd think from reading Finishing the Hat.
ReplyDeleteFranco likes jobs!
ReplyDeleteKelli O'Hara came to my mind first. She was great in South Pacific and The Pajama Game and I think she could handle the fast patter. Or Sutton Foster, who I tend to think would be great for everything.
ReplyDeleteI thought Kelli O'Hara was wonderful when I watched South Pacific on PBS. When I saw that she is doing a concert with the NY Philharmonic, I was tempted to buy tickets but I was in the process of buying my tickets to Company. Had to draw the line somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI really would like to see Sutton Foster in Anything Goes. Opens next month, I think.
Oh, Chenoweth can absolutely do manic/frantic/overwhelmed with worry - chirpy is by no means her only strong suit. Having her as Amy would be fabulous -- this casting is already incredible. Seriously, NPH, Stephen Colbert, Anika Noni Rose, Martha Plimpton? (and I'm not a big LuPone fan, but yes, add her to the amazingness of the cast.) I want to go to there.
ReplyDeleteFor DC folks who've been going to Signature for Chess, etc. - the one Matt linked is directed by Sig artistic director Eric Schaeffer.
ReplyDeleteI saw Sutton Foster performing at the Kennedy Center last month - it was one of the most hysterically funny performances I've been to in the last ten years. As well as beautifully sung.
ReplyDeleteI'm in Seattle for a conference the weekend of this show and I've basically been sulking about it since I found out. I'm sure they will show it on PBS, or similar, but it kinda kills me to miss it.
