DOES IT HAVE DUDES FLYING ON OSTRICHES WITH LANCES? Barcade, "a combination craft beer bar and old-school video arcade with 30-odd 80′s vintage cabinet games," is coming soon to Philadelphia. I want to go to there.
Somehow the woman I was staying with for the hurricane stumbled on this news, and I was all "FOLLOW THE THREAD AND TELL ME THEY'RE NOT LEAVING BROOKLYN TO DO IT." She made the case that flood news was maybe more important, but still.
My favorite thing about Barcade Williamsburg is that they have an original Tapper machine, with Budweiser branding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapper
I love the phrase "<span>the woman I was staying with for the hurricane." It is now my go-too phrase for describing those relationships that lack any official status or term (though I recognize you may not have been using it that way). </span>
Holy crap I had forgotten all about Popeye! What a great game that was. I'm pretty sure my dad had it in his bar for a spell, where I got good and hooked.
Centipede Moon Patrol The baseball game (also Atari?) with the trackball and the spring-loaded batting controls Star Wars (sit-down) Journey Xevious Zaxxon Q*Bert and of course, no self-respecting barcade would be caught without Punch-Out and Frogger.
I had a bday gathering at D&B once because I was taking my comprehensive exams a few days later and wanted to do something fun and mindless without drinking too much (while still allowing my friends the option to drink). My friends decided to pool their tickets from various games and got me a life size plush Spiderman doll that I then had to carry home on the subway. It was an interesting ride.
Recently went to the most fabulous birthday party for one of my 30-something co-workers at a place called Pinballz. They have about 200 games - half pinball, the rest arcade games, skee ball, etc. Definitely more family oriented than bar oriented but I cannot tell you how much this 40-something loved reliving my high school days of Ms. Pac-Man and, of course, Q-Bert!
This reminds me that Barcade is awesome. (Broklyn adjacent) Thing Thrower field trip: next week, some time. Ping me on Twitter (@andrewraff) if you want to come. Otherwise, I'll be there anyway with a beer and Q-Bert.

Adam, Please take me with you. I'm buying.
ReplyDeleteThe place where my kids get their hair cut has Joust.
ReplyDeleteAs if "Root Beer Tapper" fooled anyone.
ReplyDeleteRequest list:
ReplyDeleteJoust
Dig Dug
Popeye
Track and Field
Tempest
The Atari football game with the trackball
The WWF game with the tag team wrestling.
If they have air hockey, I'm so there.
ReplyDeleteAdam, this might be a great place to have the next ALOTT5MA" Philly meetup.
I prefer bubble hockey to air but will play either.

ReplyDeleteSo this is Dave & Buster's for people in their late 30s. I'm all for a quality steak in an arcade setting . . .
ReplyDeleteJim Bell can tell the story of our fellow summer associate who got kicked out of Dave & Busters during a Firm event for ... excessive enjoyment.

Guest was me.
ReplyDeleteThis I do not remember. One of you can enlighten me offline with full details, or online with enough details.
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't have been there. It was during our summer.
ReplyDeleteStill, as a junior associate, I used to mooch off those summer events all I could, and I'm pretty sure I went to at least one D&B event....
