IT GOT REAL: You know how we've had an interesting interaction or two this year with folks whose appearances on tv we've criticized on the blog? Back in the day, so did Pamie for Mighty Big TV, and
you will want to read her story which fulfills one of this blog's four recommended daily food groups.
I'd been contemplating a post for a while wondering how a widely panned Fox teen drama wound up producing 2 Oscar nominees and one of the co-stars of the second-biggest scripted show on TV today. This is much more interesting.
ReplyDeleteWhatever flaws the show had, it did have a great casting director. And that good actors can't save a poorly written show. Or landing a show quickly, but haivng it be widely panned gave the actors the opportunity and drive to work on their craft. It would be an interesting oral history.
ReplyDeleteMan, I wouldn't mind seeing a Pamie/Anne Hathaway movie come together.
ReplyDeleteI know there are casting director awards, but I always love seeing those films/TV shows, which we awful but which, in retrospect, had amazing casts.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite one is the move Satisfaction, a Justine Bateman vehicle which co-starred Liam Neeson (as the love interest!), Julia Roberts, Trini Alvarado and HITG! Scott Coffey.
Another one that falls into that category is shortlived Fox show Drive, which had a cast including Nathan Fillion (as the squarejawed hero), Kristin Lehman (now on The Killing), Dylan Baker, Emma Stone (as Baker's daughter), Taryn Manning, and Katie Finneran.
ReplyDeleteI'm very happy to see that blog linked from this one -- Pamie has such an interesting life, and refreshingly frank perspective on things. Her books make great reads, and she's very responsive if you reach out to her, as well. She is awesomesauce.
ReplyDeleteAnd Melanie Lynskey! Though she might have had one of the better (in terms of profile, not quality) previous resumes of the cast at that point.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I kind of liked Get Real at the time, though I acknowledge it wasn't the greatest thing ever. I do rememebr thinking Anne Hathaway certainly had a future. Jesse Eisenberg, I missed the boat on.
ReplyDeleteDrive was pretty good, though. It was another cancelled Tim Minear show (of Firefly, Terriers, Wonderfalls, The Inside...)
ReplyDeleteGreat story! MBTV got me through the day at my first job as an editorial assitant to an editor who did not, in fact, need an assistant. Pamie & co. saved me from boredom until I landed a new gig. I can't believe I haven't been reading her blog all this time.
