Terrific article about her in this May's New Yorker -- reading that made me root for her fiercely, even though I have no love for boxing as a sport (men's or women's).
The USWNT was the best team in the tournament, absolutely. And, in a vacuum, they clearly deserve the gold. However, they were outplayed by Canada (almost single-handedly by Christine Sinclair) in the semi-final, and they wouldn't have won the semi-final if it hadn't been for some outrageous / inexplicable / indefensible calls by the ref late in the game. Canada: 30,000,000 people still bitter, four days later.
As I've said before, Canada also should've been down to 10 women with Tancredi out at 55 mins with a red card for the head stomp (keep in mind she had the assist for sinclair at 67 mins).
And France outplayed Canada too and look where that got them....
Also, for Isaac (and many others: the NYT on Destinee Hooker.
ReplyDeleteGo USWNT! That being said, I was most impressed by the class of women's japanese soccer team both during the game and after. Mad props to them.
ReplyDeleteYou forgot the asterisk when referring to the USWNT. That's a real purty bronze medal those gals are wearing.
ReplyDeleteEh, the face-stomping moose wranglers are lucky to be leaving the UK wearing bronze instead of irons.
ReplyDeleteKATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR! KATIE TAYLOR!
ReplyDeleteCLARESSA SHIELDS, TOO!
ReplyDeleteThe USWNT was the best team in this tournament. Congratulations to them on their gold.

ReplyDeleteThat article was pheonomenal. I don't care for boxing either, but I care for her a lot.

ReplyDeleteBut they will express their bitterness with extreme politeness and vague passive-aggressiveness. That's the Canadian Way.
ReplyDeleteI won't pretend to speak for my entire country, but as far I'm concerned, you're both right.

ReplyDeleteAAARGH!! I don't know what's with the double posting of my reply. Randy, I'm Canadian, too. I was trying to be a gracious loser ;)

Outrageous refereeing at Old Trafford? Inconceivable!
