REMEMBER THE NAME NORMAN MAILER:  First ads for famous novels.

  1. That you need two pages of small type to explain "How To Enjoy James Joyce's Great Novel Ulysses" is both disturbing and accurate.

  2. The Pathetic Earthling1:43 PM

    My thoughts exactly.

  3. Eric J.2:07 PM

Even with the two pages of advice, I'm not sure "enjoy" is really the right word.

  4. Joseph Finn6:07 PM

You....read it and enjoy the story? I've never seen the huge deal where people try to tell you OMG YOU REALLY HAVE TO UNDERSTAND IT TO GET IT AND ENJOY IT!  Hell and no.  It's a damn fine novel, one of the best, that works just fine without having to pin every phrase to a board and examine it to death.

That said, there is obviosuly a lot of subext and allusion in Ulysses to dig into if you enjoy that sort of thing.  I just don't always want to enjoy a novel in that way.
