WOMEN WHO TRY TO DO THINGS SURE DO GET KILLED A LOT:  Do we have to go back to The Larry Sanders Show to find a tv comedy with as satisfying, and funny of a final season as 30 Rock's? My goodness am I going to miss this joke factory (with occasional character development), and my expectations are now pretty stratospheric for the final landing.

Remember in the poker episode, when Jack said of Kenneth: "In five years we'll all either be working for him ... or be dead by his hand"? Look where we are now.

added: Poniewozik reminds me of one of my favorite lines from last night, Kenneth's “No, sir, it’s a magical, ruth-filled business!”

added: Dot Com supercut!

  1. My one worry is that they closed up everything so well this week that there's not much left to tie up. Admittedly, that may just mean that we're even more densely packed with jokes next week than usual, which wouldn't be a bad thing.

And I'll offer Arrested Development as a competitor. Despite how the final season was treated (the final four episodes were burned off on a random night as a two hour event), man, that stuck the landing.

Not just any random night, a Friday night against the Olympics opening ceremonies.

I did not recognize, until now (thanks, Alan!) that the Wonka line is a quote from The Merchant of Venice:

    PORTIA

That light we see is burning in my hall.
How far that little candle throws his beams!
So shines a good deed in a naughty world.

  4. Arrested Development's third season was easily its weakest, and the whole MRF storyline was just tonally off. (But you're right about them sticking the landing. The season was weak, but the ending was strong.)

Could not agree more about the Mr. F stuff. Every time I rewatch the show (often passively, on Hulu, while doing grunt work at work), I am struck by how much I don't like it. Everyone's doing their best, but it's pretty much a non-starter for me.

I actually feel the same way about all the Maggie Lizer stuff. Her return is the only thing in season two that I don't like.
