YOU OTHER BROTHERS CAN'T DENY:  Linda Holmes reviews Glee's history of ripping off other people's arrangements, prompted by this week's (as Linda calls it) res ipsa oy theft of Jonathan Coulton's "Baby Got Back" cover.

  1. I didn't get around to listening to the two recordings until this morning and jeez, they didn't do anything at all to hide it, did they?

I hadn't heard of this until just now, but it's not even that they stole his arrangement note for note (which is nothing like the original); the most egregious part is that they left in the line he changed where HE SAYS HIS OWN NAME. No walking back from that.

  3. This reminds me of when I was a kid and scribbled all over the wall with crayon. When Mom came and asked who did it, I pointed at my younger brother. Only problem? I'd written AMY at the bottom of my masterpiece.

  4. Perhaps they'll be making a sizable payment to Mr. Coulton in the near future? That would make me happy.

    Wow. Listen to them side-by-side.

How does this differ from the American Idol practice of doing basically the same thing? Does AI pay for rights to covers?

    Yes. Yes they do.

They certainly don't discuss it when they use someone else's arrangement of a remake though. David Cook did it multiple times and they talked about how brilliant he was to make those "new" arrangements. Dia Frampton on The Voice did the same thing.

I feel like one of the last adult Glee fans standing but, honestly, I cringe when they do something like this. It just feeds the fire of people who hate Glee. I'll challenge anyone though to hate Glee more than lesbian Glee fans.

Public credit is nice, but royalties put food on the table.
