THREE SIX MAFIA, ONEWe talk a lot about Oscar crimes, but as angry as we might get about Crash, can't we all agree that "It Goes Like It Goes (Theme From Norma Rae)" beating "Rainbow Connection" for Best Original Song in 1979 is at the top of the list?  (The following year's winner?  "Fame."  Deserving in a vacuum, but should it have beaten "9 to 5" and "On The Road Again?")

I learned today that Lesley Gore wrote the lyrics to Out Here On My Own, also nominated from Fame.

I have Fame, On the Road Again, and 9 to 5 all on my Ipod, so I can't say that's a big problem (although I'd have 9 to 5 #1). But Rainbow Connection lost to a song I've never heard??? That's unforgivable!

Is the award for best song that happened to be used in a movie, or best use of an original song in a movie? Either way, the biggest whiff in this category's history was not even nominating any of the songs from Purple Rain, in a year in which "I Just Called To Say I Love You" won. (Also nom'd that year: two Footloose songs, Ghostbusters theme, Against All Odds.)

#2: the new song added for Evita beating "That Thing You Do!".

#3: Phil Collins' Tarzan song beating "When She Loved Me" and "Blame Canada." (With "La Resistance" not being nominated.)

  4. Good lord, no. As Adam noted, but let me expand up on it, 1999 is the worst Best Song crime. "You'll Be In My Heart" beating "Save Me," "Blame Canada" AND "When She Loved Me"? (Also, some Diane Warren song.) That's a crock any way you look at it.

I have no problem with "You Must Love Me" having a win; it was a worthy addition to Evita and a song that actually managed to fill a narrative hole in the movie. That said, That Thing You Do! should have won.

  5. "You'll Be In My Heart" isn't even the best song in Tarzan. That would be "Two Worlds."

    More, via Grantland today:

The 1964 Best Song Oscar goes to "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins; the Beatles' title song from A Hard Day's Night isn't nominated. The 1967 award goes to "Talk to the Animals" from Doctor Dolittle; Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson," written for The Graduate, isn't nominated. The 1969 award goes to "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"; the Byrds' "Ballad of Easy Rider" isn't nominated.

... In 1977, the Bee Gees' immortal and massively successful Saturday Night Fever spawns three no. 1 singles — "Stayin' Alive," "How Deep Is Your Love," and "Night Fever" — that arguably represent the apex of disco as a pop phenomenon, but garners zero Oscar nominations. The Oscar goes to Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life"; other nominees include Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager's not-bad Bond theme "Nobody Does It Better," a forgettable ballad from The Rescuers, and "The Slipper and the Rose Waltz," from The Slipper and the Rose, a Cinderella retelling with Richard Chamberlain as Prince Charming. Let me say that in a more direct way: In 1978, the Academy ignored disco but nominated a fucking waltz.

      Well said.
Often with the Oscars some of the most deserving in a range of categories (including best picture) don't even get nominated.

  7. I believe Purple Rain wasn't eligible. There is a separate category to be handed out for best original "song score"/"musical" when enough films feature enough original songs to warrant the category. It hasn't been handed out since 1984, when Purple Rain (quite deservedly) won.

And for the others I can say that they're at least somewhat defensible in that they were generally substantial pop hits or you have vote splitting.

As I commented a year ago: " Keep in mind though - The Rainbow Connection did not win Best Song, which I'd submit as a top-ten egregious oversight in Oscar history." http://throwingthings.blogspot.com/2012/01/attack-of-short-gold-men-looks-like.html?m=1

  9. I'm as big an "Easy Rider" fan as there is in this world,, but there is no cause to insult "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," which is both a nifty little ditty and a wonderful piece of counterpoint within "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid."

Funny. I just watched Norma Rae and was really impressed by It Goes Like it Goes. I think it was much more deserving than the muppets.
