DIANE LOCKHART ORDERS A MOB HIT ON HER OWN BROTHER:  Sarah Bunting has some highlights from season one of Law & Order: Original Recipe, and so I couldn't help but wonder: what are you Netflixing these days?  [I am finally getting started with Orange Is the New Black, while wrapping up my umpteenth rewatch of West Wing, season four.]

Just finished "The Thick of It" last week. One of the most quotable shows I've ever seen (though not in polite company).

  2. I've started rewatching Frasier as my pre-lights-out show. Aside from the fact that there's a lot of sexual harassment played for laughs, it (season 1, at least) holds up pretty well. One punch in the guy, though: As the series begins, Frasier is 41. Ugh.

  3. Finished Orange is the New Black and Top of the Lake (both very highly recommended); next up in the Drama category is The Fall. But really, my go-to is any episode of Better Off Ted.

  4. I love The Thick of It - be sure to check out the movie followup "In the Loop" if you haven't already.

  5. Frasier holds up great in rewatches. I snort more at it than I do just about any "new" comedy I'm watching.

I'm about two thirds way into season three of Breaking Bad (almost to an episode titled The Fly, which I know is a landmark for some reason).

  7. I've been mainlining "Fringe." It may be one of the best in the business at the curveball cliffhanger that makes you go, "WHAT??" and then start the next episode IMMEDIATELY.

Very nice, you finely tanned s**t-burger. (God, I loved Better Off Ted.)

I've got it on the list. Malcolm Tucker is my spirit animal.

  10. Every time I see Fringe in the queue I think, oh yeah, that next. Thanks for the reminder!

i saw a recommendation for "Spiral" on Netflix, which is a French law and order / Wire hybrid. Season 1 was pretty good, but a bit melodramatic. Haven't started season 2. Also started rewatching some ken burns jawns but they proved too boring.

  12. The Thick of It *would* be next on my Netflix list... if it were available on Netflix in Canada. Grr. And don't even get me started on the terrible movie selection on Netflix Canada. (You'd think there'd at least be a good selection of Canadian movies. But no.)

I know I'm not the only one to say this, but I can't recommend Orange is the New Black strongly enough. It is absolutely superb.

Next for us, I think, will be the rest of Sherlock and Slings and Arrows. We started both earlier in the summer, but then had other things distract us. (Oh yeah, and I need to watch Rectify, too.)

Technically speaking, I watched it on Hulu. Not that I know if that works in Canada.

  14. Adam - There's a prestige drama about a woman who lived just down the road from you for 3-4 years (graduated '92 but lived in NoHo for a year or two after that), it's been available for a month or so, and you're just getting to it? ;) Enjoy!

  15. I have to confess that I hated The Fly. As everyone knows, I'm gafa for Breaking Bad, but I don't think it does metaphor very well. It's much better suited for realism.

I just finished the first season of Orange is the New Black, which was terrific.

I'm in the middle of Season 2 of Arrested Development. (Yes, I'm very late to the party.) I need to get back into it -- life has gotten in the way lately.

Using a loose definition of the verb "to Netflix," my current thing is Orphan Black, which I've been streaming through my cable's "Entertainment on Demand" thingy. Fun actiony sci-fi, though I have to choose between terrible visual quality on my laptop or no subtitles on my TV (two of the main characters have strong Cockney accents).

Before that, Game of Thrones on HBOGo. OBSESSED.

Before that, Orange is the New Black. ADORED IT. So chuffed that people in general seem to be enjoying it as much as I do.

Thinking about Top of the Lake and/or Doctor Who next, though I may have reevaluate how much free screen time I'll have once the proper TV season begins (and GTAV is released--eep).

Couldn't finish Dexter because Time Warner, grump grump.

    Also, Scandal.

  20. I recently finished watching the entire series of Friday Night Lights on Netflix. Loved it, so glad I watched. I also did Orange is the New Black, which I also loved.

Not sure what's next, although I'm considering a "Sports Night" rewatch (on my DVDs) or Slings and Arrows, which many people have recommended to me. And I'm thinking of catching up on either Scandal or Orphan Black.

We recently watched Top of the Lake. It was odder than we expected, though it was nice to see Elizabeth Moss playing a modern character again.

Buffy, which I've never seen before, and none of us are that excited about at this point (about five or six episodes in). So far it's fun but not fantastic, and kind of repetitious. So many people I know love it - is it one of those shows that you need to give some time and it gets better? (We like Doctor Who and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and The Avengers, so we're not dislikers of odd alien creatures or Joss Whedon. I just feel the need for my creatures to come with a good story, and right now it's feeling repetitious. Alyson Hannigan is always amusing, though.).
Switched at Birth, which is a lot more interesting than I expected, and has better acting. We're in the first season, so not up to whatever they're doing in the current show.
Better Off Ted - second time for me, first time for the teen, who is loving it.
Plan to watch Alias at some point -- violence levels are higher than I'm fond of, but sounds like there are enough other really good parts that I can tune out during those. I like good characters, good dialogue/story, and some humor, and it sounds like it has all of those.

  23. Genevieve - Buffy is definitely one of those shows that you need to give it time to get better. Season 1 was sort of them finding their way with the stories and tone. It's okay, but there's not much that's special there, and there's a lot of one-off episodes ("villain of the week" as opposed to season-long Big Bads). They really start to hit their stride in season 2. I hope you give it a little more time!

Nope, no Hulu in Canada, which is frustrating beyond words. And in most cases, network websites won't allow us to play video, either. (Fortunately, shows that also air on Canadian networks are generally available on the website for the Canadian network.)

The only really annoying thing about Canadian TV is when the Canadian network doesn't air the show at the same time as the US network. This usually happens for shows like Project Runway, Top Chef. You know, shows with competitions whose results are easily spoiled.

I couldn't find it on Netflix, only In the Loop. Where did you watch it?

Agree with Sue. Buffy becomes truly GREAT in season 2. The season 1 finale, "Prophecy Girl", is a turning point, but I think the series becomes absolutely essential viewing once Spike and Drusilla are introduced early in season 2.

Thanks, Sue, that's exactly what I wanted to know! Very glad to hear it. Would it make sense to skip ahead to season 2? I don't know that the teen will have patience for making it through the first season.

Also, more library than Netflix (since it's not streaming, and I get twice as many disks from the library at a time than from Netflix), but I recently finished all the seasons of Gilmore Girls, which I had never seen, and now am Tivo'ing the first season for fun watching.

Sorry was using Netflix as a catch all. It's on Hulu. They're pretty good with foreign shows.

I watched Party Down and am now finally watching Breaking Bad (for the first time). Yes, I am on some sort of multi-year delay in my Netflixing.

  32. I think you should stick it out with season 1. (I think it's a shorter season than the rest, so you shouldn't have that many to go). "Prophecy Girl" is a highlight, and the season is a good beginning to the Buffy/Angel dynamic. Anyone else agree?

  33. Man, I hate Drusilla. But season 2 has so many great episodes, especially in the second half. And now looking at a listing of all the seasons, I realize how brilliant season 3 was - The Wish, Dopplegangland, Homecoming, The Prom, Helpless, and Graduation, among others. Maybe I should go watch season 3 again...

  34. Randy6:33 PM

Yes. It's only 12 episodes. Then again, I'm a completist when it comes to stuff like this. :)

Fringe is absolutely worth the investment of time. Especially its first three seasons, and especially seasons 2 and 3. And most especially season 3. But it's worth starting from the beginning... though I don't think it's necessary to bother watching seasons 4 and 5. (Still, we live in a universe that gave us FIVE SEASONS of Fringe. That's pretty terrific.)

  36. I'm redoing Breaking Bad from ep 1 -- I'm at the end of Season 2, just saw the scene where REDACTED just stood there and let REDACTED REDACTED on REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED. That, for the record, was when I lost any interest in REDACTED coming out of this with any kind of happiness.

  37. Thanks for all the ideas! I spent the summer watching all seven seasons of the Shield and haven't been able to figure out what to watch next. I've been skipping around my favorite episodes of Friday Night Lights, Everwood, Gilmore Girls and Cheers.

Finally finished Season 8 of Peep Show and am working on Season 3 and 4 of The Thick of It on Hulu+. Rewatching Greek through Comcast OnDemand - perfect folding laundry/bill paying show. And watching and re watching all three seasons of Happy Endings on my IPad. May tackle Justified next.

    Ayup.

  40. I'm watching Spiral too - halfway through season 2. (I don't like it as much as season 1, but I have a much better sense of the world than I did earlier. Will probably stick around for the whole thing.)

  41. Loved Top of the Lake. Also, the location is stunning.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Have watched Top of the Lake (highly recommend), The Fall (was disappointed at the resolution), Jekyll (did you like Sherlock? You'll like this), and Luther (love it). Now watching Broadchurch (which I'm annoyed I can't marathon) and Spiral (French suspense/crime drama - I've run out of British ones).

Also watching (in real time) Breaking Pointe, Ink Master, and all manner of competitive cooking/decorating shows.

Thanks, Sue and Randy! I may watch most of season 1 without the teen, then, since he wasn't warming to it that much (liked the first episode and wanted to see more, but has been less enthused when I suggested watching more). And then bring him back in before Prophecy Girl.
