David Sills, a highly-touted youth quarterback, made a verbal commitment tonight to accept a college football scholarship from USC.Sills was already being profiled by SI when he was 11.
Sills is not even in high school yet. He is a seventh-grader at Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear.
Red Lion high school varsity coach Eric Day confirmed the decision by Sills tonight, also confirming that USC coach Lane Kiffin made the scholarship tonight to the 13-year-old Sills.
...Sills will be able to sign a letter of intent in February 2015, unless of course NCAA regulations have changed by then.

HECK, HE'S TWO YEARS TOO YOUNG TO BE RECEIVING ADVICE FROM TAYLOR SWIFT: I'm just going to say this whole college football recruiting thing has gotten out of hand:

As someone who has dealt with the madness of early commits and football recruiting, I have to say this is really ridiculous. It's bad enough when high school juniors commit to a school before they have even visited the campus. Stuff like this is all about publicity - it's not remotely about football. I can't tell you how many times I've heard coaches of male sports say that getting a kid to commit before their senior year of HS is really silly, because you just can't predict how a kid will grow and fill out during their high school years. Besides, didn't we just go through a week of kids decommitting all over the place before they signed Letters of Intent?
ReplyDeleteI'm actually okay with this provided that the college commit that - short of paralysis - the kid will start no fewer than 30 games during his four years of eligibility and will play no fewer than 90 quarters of football. You want to make your bet now, Trojan, make your bet.
ReplyDeleteI truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our world, and I can say with 99% certainty that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.
ReplyDeleteI don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as memory becomes less expensive, the possibility of downloading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could see in my lifetime.

I file any stories about 13-year-old QBs under a file in my head titled "MARINOVICH, Todd".
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of USC going with a 13-year-old QB. If he can play right now, put him in.
ReplyDeleteThey can't start him now. The boosters would be breaking all kind of child labor laws.
ReplyDeleteThe Spacewoman comment is mine. Eric J - ha. Maybe they can voluntarily sanction themselves by prohibiting themselves from scheduling games from February through July.
