GIVE IN! GIVE IN! Updating a Really? They're Remaking That? story from February 2009, it seems that the Jim Carrey-Jake Gyllenhaal film remake of Damn Yankees is still proceeding, with Joe Hardy now playing for the Chicago Cubs in the anabolic era, according to writer/director Todd Graff (Bandslam):

"It is going to be set now, and my whole pitch was that it should feel like 'Jerry Maguire' with songs," Graff explained. "It should really feel like the real world of a major sports franchise and what would happen with this fantastical goofy, funny idea of a baseball fanatic who sold his soul to Jim Carrey as the devil in order to be turned into a 20-year-old Joe Mauer."

Graff is planning to hold on to only a handful of the original songs and having new ones composed — including one possibly about, yep, steroids.

Still no Lola named. (Anne Hathaway?)

  1. Hathaway would be interesting, and playing the vamp would be a departure from what she typically plays, but the logical choice is Scarlett Johansson, right?

Except that from all evidence so far, Hathaway can sing better.

Catherine Zeta-Jones would be an excellent Lola, and she definitely can play the vamp.

Anne Hathaway is pretty. She is not seductive. As for CZJ, I literally can never understand a word she says. I can wade through some tough accents, but there is something about hers that makes it completely incomprehensible.

    1. But playing for a National League team doesn't make sense in "Damn Yankees." Bah, maybe an English director should do a reverse "Fever Pitch" and remake it as "Damn Man U."

    2. Even though they're not using the Fosse choreography, why not Beyonce as Lola (Since she borrowed from Gwen Verdon for the Single Ladies video).

Well, I suppose they could set the climax of the movie on June 6-8 2003. June baseball at Wrigley, feel the exciement!

There's only one person to play Lola - Kim Cosmopolitan.

If Kim Cosmo can't do it, perhaps they can wait long enough for the next generation to take the role. I figure anouther 20 years shoudl do it, but my sense is that Lil' Kim Comso could be ham enough to do it.

I have no idea if she can sing, but Christina Hendricks would seem to fit the role.

My comment from the original post still stands...Katie Holmes already knows the role. She was Lola in a local high school's production of Damn Yankees.

There seems to be a rule on ALOTT5MA that if you identify an unfilled role and wait long enough for it, eventually somebody will propose Anne Hathaway or Christina Hendricks (if it's a female role) or NPH or Nathan Fillion (if it's a male role).

And I say many things would've been improved had they heeded our advice.

I think my Lola days are -- sadly -- long gone.
