I don't think Ishknits is part of Crochet Guevara, she's just getting love from them.
She recently did some seat cozies on Market-Frankfort line. http://www.woostercollective.com/2011/03/yarn_bombing_philidephias_blue_line.html
I'm enjoying the ridiculousness that is other knitters picking on her execution (see "Sherry W"'s comment on http://streetsdept.com/2011/04/03/ishknits-bombs-the-art-museum/ and I've seen it elsewhere too).
Generally, you can't make a sweater that fits Rocky (or a tree, another common yarnbombing target) well enough to put it on quickly, and so you make something and rush in and quickly baste it on before people stop you. See, e.g., http://vimeo.com/18306137
Can't a man just make a post where he wants to link to the picture and use the phrase "Crochet Guevara" and not sweat the details? Just how big is this guerrilla knitting movement?
Being a knitter myself, I read an article about this in one of my knitting magazines a while back. Magda Sayeg, a knitter out of Houston (though I think she may have recently moved to Austin) is credited with starting the whole movement, I guess. She founded Knitta, Please, and has covered parking meters in NYC, an entire Mexico city bus, etc. If you scroll down on the Knitta, Please site, you'll see where they yarnbombed the trees in front of the Blanton Museum at UT. It's gorgeous.

ReplyDeleteAbout three bags full.
ReplyDelete"Local guerilla knitting movement" are not words that seem to go together too well. Love the name Crochet Guevara.

Yarn bombing is a little more specific: see http://doanie.wordpress.com/2011/01/06/yarn-bombs-for-knitwits/yarn-bomb-7/
ReplyDeleteJohn & Exene probably use black yarn.
