LOVE that they went with Samantha Barks as Eponine. I believe I made my feelings about Lea Michele playing MY part very clear in an earlier discussion (full disclosure: the only place I have ever actually played the role of Eponine is in my own imagination). I really thought she'd end up getting it, though.
Samantha Barks should be terrific as Eponine. When they cast her, my respect for this production went way up - they cast someone who wasn't a name (except in England, and there she's a theatre name and somewhat a TV name but I don't know how far that goes towards selling movie tickets) presumably just because she's very talented.
Anne Hathaway does right by "I Dreamed a Dream." As much as I love and worship the original Fantine, the iconic Ms. Patti LuPone, I've always thought she lacked Fantine's desperate fragility. Hathaway's rendition nails her loss of hope.
Casting Russell Crowe as Javert is inspired. He is such a great actor and will add some needed depth to this role. And I loved Samantha Barks in the 25th Anniversary Concert -- she's going to be a kick-ass Eponine! And Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Thenardiers? Brilliant.
I am extremely excited about this movie (can you tell?), which will be an awesome Christmas present!
Hmmm....OK, besides thinking Crowe just feels wrong, this could work. Could.

ReplyDeleteI was actually really impressed with this. Hathaway did a good job, and the visuals look good, if somewhat more rainy than I envisioned.

ReplyDeleteI may have cried a little during this teaser. Gorgeous. So excited.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait.
