  1. Mrs. Russ and I are about 3/4 through the unabridged audio version of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (we just visited Savannah for the first time).  There's a pretty funny passage regarding Uga, and the man who owned the "actual" Uga (or at least one iteration thereof), who is an attorney in at least one of the trials arising from some of the events addressed in the book.

  2. And then there's this gem, from early on in the book, when one character (Joe Odom) is telling the author the "rules" of living in Savannah:

"Rule number three: Observe the high holidays - Saint Patrick’s Day and the day of the Georgia-Florida football game. Savannah has the third-biggest Saint Patrick’s Day parade in America….  The game is nothing less than a war between the gentlemen of Georgia and the Florida barbarians."

  3. heathalouise3:49 PM

Uga will always be #1 in my heart, despite me committing the grave sin of never attending a Dawgs game when I was a student at Georgia.

Is there any question that #1 for MLB mascots would be the Phanatic?

  4. isaac_spaceman4:03 PM

I'm sorry, but Uga, should not be on this list.  Uga dates back to 1959, but Yale's Handsome Dan, the original bulldog mascot -- and apparently the second animal mascot in the country, predated only by Princeton's tiger -- has been around since 1889, and continuously since the late 1920s or early 1930s.  Surely the people who started the Uga tradition were aware that they were simply stealing a far more venerable one.  Also, Yale is superior to the University of Georgia and every other college and university.

  5. Maret4:09 PM

I mock my brother and his wife mercilessly for the fact that their Pomona College mascot is the sage hen and the actual mascot that shows up at games is known as Cecil Sage Hen. That said, at their wedding earlier this year, which was held on campus, some of their friends arranged with the school for use of the mascot costume, so post-ceremony and pre-reception, this giant blue sage hen mascot came running out and posed for pictures with them, with the other Pomona alum there, and with the entire crowd. Which is pretty awesome for a mascot, even a wimpy one like a sage hen.

  6. Jenn.4:11 PM

Geez, Isaac.  If you followed up on Georgia history at all, you'd realize that Georgia's first president (one Abraham Baldwin, signatory to the U.S. Constitution) was a Yale grad, and that we'd expressly selected our mascot as an homage to Yale's.  Sure, it sucks for Yale that Georgia's mascot has so far exceeded Yale's in legend, personality, experiences, on-field awesomeness, and glory, but so be it.  [Woof.]

Also, the attorney from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has owned all of the Ugas.

I refuse to comment on that "poll."  I shall, instead, seethe in relative silence rather than give TPE the satisfaction of the predicted cries of injustice.  No comment on the possibility that this refusal reflects me having already given the boyfriend an earful on this topic.

  7. Greg W4:20 PM

Also Maret, Cecil chirps (as do all Pomona first-year students as they walk through the gates of the college on their first day; chirping consists of saying the word "chirp"), such that the college fight song is, "When Cecil Sagehen Chirps," which features the immortal lin<span><span>es, "we're gonna fracture the foes of Pomona's might / we're gonna whale on their bods for the blue and white."</span></span>

  8. Watchman4:25 PM

Just wait til 'Bama switches to a live elephant...

  9. Ramar4:29 PM

What are all those doofuses in costumes doing on the list alongside real mascots?

  10. Maret4:35 PM

Greg, I cannot thank you enough for these additional details to make fun of my family with.

  11. Scott4:40 PM

Any list without the Nittany Lion is no list at all.

  12. Benner5:04 PM

    In Alabama the Tuscaloosa . . .

  13. isaac_spaceman5:14 PM

that comma after UGA in the first line is a typo, not an error of ignorance, by the way.

  14. isaac_spaceman5:16 PM

It is incomprehensible to me that there are places in this country so backward that they believe that Uga exceeds Handsome Dan in any respect whatsoever.

  15. Joseph J. Finn5:16 PM

    Two thoughts:

    1.  Uga? That genetic misshappen freak of a dog?  Sorry Amy, but I'm not down with that.

    2.  (climbing on soap box)  Even worse, the "leprechaun," which deserves to be in quotes for having nothing to do with Irish culture besides being a mockery of it just as insulting as Chief Wahoo and Chief Illiniwek were back in their days. Freaking drunken minstrel show is what it is.

  16. Heather K5:21 PM

My undergrad The University of Central Missouri mules have a real live mule, and the most recent one was gifted to the university (after Abedale the one who was there while I was attending) by none other than fellow alumni Eric 'Mancow' Muller of shock jock fame.

  18. kenedy jane6:13 PM

I have to say, 'How 'bout them 'Noles?'  There is nothing like sitting in Doak Campbell on a Saturday in Autumn and cheering while Chief Osceola spears the field.  Cool, cool, cool.

Other mascot trivia - the mascot of Texas A&M (a dog named Reveille) lives on campus - in a Corps dorm.  She is never left alone, accompanying the corps members to class.  As with all things A&M, there are traditions regarding Reveille.  It is said that if she barks during class, all classes are dismissed.

  19. Jenn.6:51 PM

Not to worry, Isaac.  As you gain in enlightenment and wisdom, you shall understand.

  20. Jenn.6:52 PM

I knew that I should have posted my grammatical mocking sooner.  Sigh.

  21. Adam C.8:00 PM

<p><span>Is there any question that #1 for MLB mascots would be the Phanatic?  (@heathalouise)</span>
</p><p>No, unless you are Tommy Lasorda.
</p><p>Also, I realize the list is meant to cover just college football, but seriously, give it up for the St. Joe's Hawk, who has to flap its wings (arms) constantly -- including halftime -- through St. Joe's basketball games.
</p><p>Last but not least, when I was an undergrad at Penn, a number of our students were responsible for this infamous Tiger be-mascot-heading.  That. Was. Awesome.  (Also, notable in that one of the affected mascots was the brother of then Penn hoops center, and now Penn hoops broadcaster, Vince Curran.)

  22. isaac_spaceman8:25 PM

I think that what you mean is that when you gain in enluxenment, you will see the veritas.

  23. I think it's fine to have a bulldog in New England.  Not so nice for the bulldog in Georgia.

And don't get me started on the weirdness of the UGA bloodline.  Has no one at Georgia looked at the various European aristocracies and thought, "Hmmm, new blood might be good"?

    Russ is getting jobbed:

  24. If I am the Amy to which you refer, you should know that my heart belongs to Smokey:

  25. Maddy1:12 AM

The Scripps/Mudd/CMC teams are the Athenas (women) and the Stags (Mudd and CMC men), which totally beats the Pomona/Pitzer Sagehens.
    Ps guys college is awesome...

  26. Insert additional woofing here.

On another note:  I had, at some point, been told by a Swarthmore grad that its teams are called the "Little Quakers" and was very disappointed to discover that it was not actually true.  I have tried to think of something less intimidating than a pacifist who also happens to be small in size, but my imagination fails me.  Even the sage hen sounds more fiercesome.

  27. heather k8:01 PM

Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington is home of the Fighting Missionaries (and they chant 'Missionaries, missionaries, always on top!').

  28. Before WWI the mascot was the Hun.  It's apparently unclear why it was changed.  Students are far more into the number 47 than anything else, however.

  29. isaac_spaceman5:51 PM

I knew people from Whitman, and they seemed particularly unlikely to incorporate even mildly racy double entendres into anything they did.

I noticed you guys were talking about high heels and I wanted to share something with you that you may be interested in...

A little over 2 years ago, my husband and I got married in Los Angeles, California. Unfortunately, the day of our wedding was spoiled with rain. We have been having the wedding out on the grass and believe it or not, I was wearing high heeled shoes! They were ruined by the end from the day :(

Despite the fact that this was one with the worst experiences I've ever had with my shoes, it truly led my sister in law to create a item which is just awesome! It is already been featured on TV shows like the Girls of the Playboy Mansion, as well as the show Kendra.

Heels Above will aid you protect your high-priced heels from sinking in mud, slipping in cracks, and walking on sand and gravel. It is a new merchandise, and I thought I'd share it with all of you.

They're taking orders now. You are able to order one pair, or a few dozen for your big wedding day.

I hope you guys like it... If you've any questions, feel free to drop them an email on their web site:
