BUT I CAN'T SEE YOU EVERY NIGHT: The ALOTT5MA Unnecessary Remakes Desk reports that FNL/Parenthood executive producer Jason Katims will be attempting to adapt About A Boy into a single-camera comedy for NBC, but at least as far as Deadline relates the mom is now described as "kooky" and not "depressed and suicidal."
About a decade ago, Fox also started developing an adaptation, with Patrick Dempsey as the lead. Go ahead and cast your leads, but recognize that a commenter on the AV Club already said "David Schwimmer."
If it had a Disqus account, Adam C.'s RemakeBot 2000 would surely say, "Oh, for fuck's sake."
ReplyDeleteI don't know--I can actually sort of see this working with Katims in charge. Wouldn't you have said much the same thing about Parenthood 5 years ago? Not sure who I'd cast in the Grant role, but the Toni Collette part is the sort of role I think Elizabeth Banks would be fascinating in--she was really good in People Like Us in a similar vein.
ReplyDeleteHuh. I kind of like that Banks idea. As for the Grant role, I may be way off base here, but think about this: Ryan Reynolds. He has that likeable dick thing he can do, he's a better actor than people give him credit for, he might be gettable at the moment (and for some reason, his performance in The Nines makes me think this isn't a crazy idea). He might be too big for a series get, but ah well.
ReplyDeleteMichael Raymond-James (Terriers' Britt)
ReplyDeleteOr, make that the storyline for Season 9+ of HIMYM.
And why doesn't Adam C's RemakeBot 2000 have a Disqus account?
ReplyDeleteApparently, it runs IE7.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if MR-J pulls off the Grant lovable cad shtick, but maybe that would be an improvement. What about Joshua Jackson, coming off of the final season of Fringe?
ReplyDeleteDo we think Scott Porter is too young?
ReplyDeleteJoseph Gordon-Levitt. I have full confidence in JK's ability to make this show compelling.
ReplyDeleteJason Bateman?
ReplyDeleteI just want to chime in to say that I am also troubled by the announced Mummy remake. I love the Mummy movies. They're in my batch of "Always Stop to Watch" movies.
ReplyDeleteMacaulay Caulkin as Hugh Grant, Tyler Perry is the mom, and the boy is now a girl, adopted and in a wheelchair.
ReplyDeleteReynolds also was great in Definitely, Maybe, acting opposite a kid actor (Abigail Breslin) and ... Elizabeth Banks.
ReplyDeleteJGL's not doing series tv at this point in his career.
ReplyDeleteI'm not predicting -- I'm just saying he'd be good at it.
ReplyDeleteAbigail Breslin is now 16 so may be out of the picture.
ReplyDeleteWhaaaat. I hadn't heard this. I'm with you on those movies.
ReplyDeleteAnd this makes me think: what about Brendan Fraser for this About a Boy thing?
