WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HAVE LEARNED NOTHING MORE ABOUT HIM. I HAVE, HOWEVER, LEARNED SOME THINGS ABOUT MYSELF. THERE ARE THINGS MEN CAN DO TO ONE ANOTHER THAT ARE SOBERING TO THE SOUL. IT IS ONE THING TO RECONCILE THESE THINGS WITH GOD, BUT ANOTHER TO SQUARE IT WITH YOURSELF: It is time to celebrate the best of television in 2009-10. And as bad as the twenty most embarrassing moments in Emmy history have been, there's always room for a twenty-first. Good luck, Jimmy Fallon:

  1. Per Feinberg, apparently Nina Dobrev (of Vampire Diaries) was the one person in the opening number who none of us recognized.

Hey, y'all.  I started watching the Emmys late, and so was constantly behind on reading the live blog.  Highly entertaining.  I overall thought that Jimmy Fallon did well---I'd have forgiven a lot in light of that trio of songs commemorating 24, L&O, and Lost, especially that Green Day impression.  One thought I did want to put out there was that I was a little surprised that so many folks were grouchy about the Kyra Sedgwick win.  As I understand it, the acting nominations are really based on a single episode submission---which is how Mariska Hargitay keeps getting nominations---and Kyra Sedgwick was thought by a number of critics to have submitted the best acting showcase of the five.  So, setting aside that I do enjoy the Closer and think that she does a great job in it, the single episode rule could have been what put her over the top there.

Similarly, that's why it would be have been perfectly reasonable for Conan O'Brien to have beaten out the Daily Show this year.  As I understand it, his package consisted of shows from his last couple of weeks, which were great.  Even if the entire TDS season was better than Conan's whole (truncated) season, I suspect that Conan's submission package was a strong contender even without the "victim" angle.

Ha, I was just coming here to ask who that was. Our conversation about it last night:
The w: Who is that other girl?
    me: Maybe it's Emanuelle Chriqui?
    w: Who is that?
m: She was in Snow Day.
    w: What else?
    m: Nothing important.

Is the single submitted episode circulated to voters so that voters can at least have some knowledge of the nominees when making their vote or are the votes really supposed to be based on the submitted episode only?  I have to believe it is the former, in which case, the submissions probably have minimal impact on the vote between high profile shows like The Tonight Show and The Daily Show.  A lot of voters might have based their Sedgwick vote on her submission, but it is hard to believe that an Emmy voter would need a highlight package to know what Conan has been up to this year.

  5. I think that the submissions for at least some of the show awards (as opposed to performers) include multiple episodes.  I think that for drama and comedy it may be three episodes.  I also seem to recall that the Conan submission was for multiple shows, but I'm not sure for how many.

  6. Yes, for "series," you get to select a group of episodes.  The other complicating factor is that folks can select a two-parter and have it count as only one episode.  For instance, Matthew Fox and Tony Shalhoub selected the respective finales, which were double-length episodes.

You guys didn't know who that girl was?  So sad.  The day I stopped watching Degrassi was the day that I commented on Nina Dobrev's pulchritude and Spacewoman accused me of being a creepy old man.

I was similarly wondering if the Degrassi alums were all tweeting about how unfair it was that she was on the Emmys.

Also, as you know, what changed was not that you got too old to appropriately comment on how hot a Degrassi star was - it was that suddenly, they were casting more attractive Canadians.

You know, she played the mother of a three- or four-year-old kid on the show.  And at the time I made the comment, she was 20, I think.  And she was sleeping with thirtysomething fashion photographers.  So it was almost like they had cast her as a high school kid but were otherwise determined to make her character several years older than that.
