JE ME SOUVIENS: An open thread to discuss tonight's Closing Ceremonies, and to talk about what we'll remember from these Olympic Games.

Overall, these Games felt like the coronation of the expected -- Team Canada in hockey and curling (three golds and a silver); Kim Yu-Na and Shen & Zhao on the ice; Shaun White in the air; and Apolo Anton Ohno's farewell lap. The most intriguing surprise was in ice dancing -- a sport about which I ordinarily don't care -- but if you didn't smile seeing Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir and those cute kids from Michigan best the dastardly and more-than-borderline racist presentation from the Russian team, well, I'm not sure what Games you were watching. (Incidentally, if you watch nothing else from the figure skating gala, do watch those plucky Canadians.)

Your memories may vary. Let's hope for a fun closing for tonight, and do chime in when there's something worth noting.

I think Tessa Virtue is the lost Deschanel sister.

I think for Canadians the games surpassed anything they could have ever imagined.  The streets of Vancouver have been filled day after day with exuberant and happy locals and tourists.  The sun shone in the city, the cherry trees blossomed and the beer flowed.  What more could we have asked for?  (oh, plus Canada won a gold medal in hockey in case you hadn't heard)

Bringing Ms. LeMay out again was perfect. Could not have scripted a better response.

Oh my... why is Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila singing a lame bilingual rewrite of "Since U Been Gone"?  Still... it's better than Nickelback... (I hope the rumors of their appearance are wrong...)

  5. I tuned out during Torino in '06 (college and all of that), so the essential thing that I'll take away from Vancouver is that I re-discovered my Olympic giddiness. I think I do like the winter better than the summer, although I've been a dork for this stuff since '96. My other lasting impression - and maybe I have Brian Williams's "Winter Olympics = ice & blades & speed" package from early on to blame for this - is that I developed a whole new respect for these athletes and what they do, whether it's aerial skiing or just ice dancing.

Gotta say - the choice of opera singers was spot on.  Ben Heppner and Maria Guleghina?  Good choices.  (Back to my weird cultural corner now, thanks.)

In my head, there's an alternate closing ceremony going on, featuring the Canadian bands I actually like.  Arcade Fire... Stars... New Pornographers.  Even an appearance by Rufus Wainwright!  Alas, VANOC CEO John Furlong's terrible speech keeps bringing me back to reality.  (Is it airing like this on NBC?  I suppose I could just switch the channel from CTV to check, but the remote is just out of reach...)

  9. Mine includes Sloan and Jale, but my musical tastes basically froze in 1993-94.  We didn't see the Furlong speech.

  12. Good call on Neil Young!  Followed by Shatner and Catherine O'Hara and Michael J Fox... unfortunately none were especially funny.  And now... GIANT BEAVERS.  WTF do Americans think of this?!??!  It's like... equal parts Mel Brooks musical and Guy Maddin freudian nightmare.

  14. Dear World, Canadian music is NOT just Buble and Nickelback and Avril Lavigne.  Although now part of me wishes Platinum Blonde and Glass Tiget would take the stage.

  15. Had we beaten the Canadians in WW2, this is what The Producers would have been.

  16. (Glass Tiger, I mean, of course.)  I see that y'all in the US have been spared this, in favor of The Marriage Ref.  Although now you're missing Alanis's *surprising* cleavage.  Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Heh... I wish!  She sang one of her slow songs about being miserable.  (As opposed to one of her fast songs about being miserable.)  MY GOD, this entire production is featuring everything I hate about Canadian music.

It's not airing on the West Coast yet.  This sounds like an epic trainwreck.  Sigh.  Canada, you were having SUCH a good day.  And then....Nickelback.  Did no one at VANOC get the memo that a pickle has more facebook fans than Nickelback?  I'd rather watch the pickle.

  20. does this mean in 4 years at the sochi closing ceremonies we will be treated to a T.AT.U reunion?

these athletes should be honored and celebrated
so why are they being subjected to nickleback and avril lavigne?
especially when being seranaded with a song that includs the lyric "balls out"

So Neil Young, who seems to be dressed as Meatloaf, concludes the Olympics singing "Long May You Run" - a song about a car that he also played on the last Conan show.

Whole lot of things not right with those closing cermonies.

If I told you that Michael Buble ended his set atop an oversized Mountie Hat, you would be shocked if that wasnt the most rediculous thing of the evening...

As a west coast Canadian, I was a little lost with all the native stuff from the opening ceremony, because along with everyone I spoke to, none of us can relate to it anymore. Although after a few days of reflection, I suppose thats part of Canada's heritiage and something that the world can use to identify Canada. I'm ok with that.

The closing ceremonies however, basically assured me that NO ONE on the planning commity had any clue what to do. Like they had spent every decent idea they had on the opening and turned over the closing to a class of 5th graders. Inflatable beavers, hockey players, and dancing canoes? Nickleback, Avril, Alannis, Hedley, & some other french canadian artists that sang songs not at all related to Canada? Luckily the bar I was at put on something else to listen to during that episode.

Blurbs from such 'famous' Canadians like Shatner and Fox were decent, although we've been seeing them on commercials for the last two weeks, so even that felt like a repeat of sorts.

Was the best thing about the closing ceremony really the outfits from on snowboarders? Wow.

I thought it was hilarious, poking fun at every Canadian stereotype and 'icon'. I'm pretty sure it was meant to be over the top and silly. And it was. Pretty funny - the giant mounties, the table hockey game, the animals. And I was shocked, but I actually enjoyed Hedley.

My image of the Olympics is probably Jon Montgomery night - throwing out his chest on the podium, drinking the jug of beer, just so damn happy to win one of the craziest sports - skeleton.
