WE ARE HERE TO SHOW THOSE GUYS THAT ARE INCHING THEIR WAY ON THE FREEWAYS IN THEIR METAL COFFINS THAT THE HUMAN SPIRIT IS STILL ALIVE: With John Hughes slotted for a separate tribute,
NYMag forecasts who'll get the "pimp slot" in this year's Oscar Necrology.
Yep, I'm with New York Mag. Swayze, for sure.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Brittany Murphy makes the cut.
ReplyDeleteYeah, no one but Hughes could beat Swayze. Over/Under on the montage of his images ending with one from Ghost?
ReplyDeleteI think Karl Malden gets it on the basis of two nominations and one victory in the supporting category back in the day.
ReplyDeleteSince the Golden Globes went with the Ghost image, I'm going to say they're going with one from Dirty Dancing.
ReplyDeleteBig applause for Natasha Richardson.
ReplyDeleteBrittany Murphy makes the cut. But it will be a travesty if Karl Malden doesn't get the pimp slot.
ReplyDeleteSeparately, I'm stunned that Wikipedia has a list of TV-Guide covers, but doesn't have a list of Oscar montage pimp slots. Especially since the whole "In Memoriam" thing is less than 2 decades old.
Separately, http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/movieawards/oscars/2010-03-03-oscar-memorial-segment_N.htm
ReplyDeleteSo maybe Brittany Murphy doesn't make the cut.
Interesting bit from that USA Today article: For Swayze they are using clips from Dirty Dancing and Ghost. But Workman says that with Ghost, "you don't want it to look too much like he died."
ReplyDeleteMy money is on Swayze getting the closing slot. But I wish they would use that "Adios amigo" skydiving clip from Point Break instead (plus there's the Kathryn Bigelow connection.)
I say they end on Red Dawn. Wolverines!
ReplyDeleteI think it has to be Swayze. NY Mag is right - Malden was 97, and Swayze was not only insanely popular, but went through a very public battle with cancer.
ReplyDeleteTed, thanks for the link to the USA Today article. How stressful for Bruce Davis. To respect all the hard work that goes into producing this series of clips, I will pay extra close attention to this portion of the show. I've always admired the work of film editors, especially the geniuses who throw together every heart-wrenching trailer that ultimately leads me to tears. The stars get all the credit, but there are far too many unsung heroes! I guess it's better for them--the paparazzi leaves them alone.
ReplyDeletethe paparazzi LEAVE them alone. What's the singular? Paparazzum?
ReplyDeletePaparazzo.
