ONLY WITHOUT THE STEEP DOWNWARD SPIRAL AT THE END: I've thought for a while that Emma Stone could well be the next big young comedy star (following in the recent footsteps of Kirsten Dunst, Lindsay Lohan, and Anne Hathaway), and the trailer for Easy A only solidifies that, especially given that she's surrounded by a pretty stellar cast (Dan Byrd, Cougar Town's secret weapon, as her gay BFF, Amanda Bynes as the bitchy queen bee, Thomas Haden Church and Lisa Kudrow as teachers, Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci as her parents) and what appears from the trailer to be a quippy and funny script. I'm certainly interested. (See also our 2004 discussion of "who's the next Julia Roberts?")

I can't wait to see this and she is the main reason.  I'm not sure if it was that popular but I loved "The Rocker" and her in it.

Yeah, after the Devil trailer and Skyline trailer I actually said out loud "will they ever make a good movie again?" Then the Easy A trailer came on and the mood definitely brightened in the room. As someone who could watch Saved! and Mean Girls alternating on repeat indefinitely, sign me up.

OK, and the Jackass 3D trailer helped, too. Let's face it--it was a room filled with people who were 16-22 when that show first came on. We're not made of stone.

I love Saved!, although I'm glad we're saying Emma Stone is the new thing, and not Jena Malone.

  4. I am confused by how any of the Jackass films are anything more than "Man Getting Hit In Groin By Football: The Film."

Matt, you write that as if it's a bad thing.  Homer Simpson may not be the smartest man in the world (except that one time), but he's right about donuts, pork, beer, and the endless amusement of football in the groin.

Matt, because they don't have George C. Scott?

(And what's wrong with Jena Malone?  And speaking of Saved!, when the hell is someone going to write a part that Mandy Moore is suited for again?  Or Eva Amurri?  Or Macauley Culkin, for that matter?  I think I need a lie-down.)

Jena Malone just rubs me the wrong way. I'm not sure what it is. Her voice always sounds like her feelings have just been horribly hurt, even when she's happy or angry. And I guess this is casting, but she can be such a wet blanket.

The second worst casting in Saved!? Mandy Moore's wig. At least I hope it was a wig and she didn't do that to herself on purpose.

But I do love that movie. My sister and I often run down the hall yelling "Pastor Skip! Pastor Skip!".

  8. I'll definitely see this movie. When I saw the trailer I couldn't figure out where I'd scene Emma Stone before. And then I remembered.... The House Bunny. Yeah. I saw that movie. It was a rental, but still. What can I say? I like Colin Hanks and I (sometimes) like my entertainment to be as mindless as possible.

IMDB tells me she's currently filming The Help - another movie I will absolutely see. My book club read that earlier this year and I'm looking forward to seeing the movie version. I hope they don't screw it up.

  10. The House Bunny is a bit underrated, because Anna Faris is great in it.  (And someone, I forget who, on the AV Club really agrees with me.)

  11. It's a perfect adequate formula film.  It's Revenge of the Nerds, gender-swapped with a lot more sweetness replacing the misogyny of the oppressed becoming the oppressors.

  12. I have a secret crush on Anna Faris, so The House Bunny is definitely a guilty pleasure.

It's funny - at first I thought Emma Stone was cast in roles where they really wanted Kristen Stewart but couldn't get her...but, Emma can act, and Kristen...well, I don't understand why she's in everything.

  13. She was great in CHEATERS, the HBO film about the Steinmetz academic decathlon scandal (which really should be an Ur-text for the readers of this blog).

Huh. I'd forgotten about the Steinmetz scandal for some reason, Adam; I'll have to check out Cheaters.  Thanks!

Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple ipad and tested to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop,
just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83
views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!
