TRY IMAGINING A PLACE WHERE IT'S ALWAYS SAFE AND WARM. "COME IN," SHE SAID, "I'LL GIVE YOU SHELTER FROM THE STORM":  Good luck, fellow East Coasters. Check in as appropriate.

  1. Hanging here in Brooklyn. I have the Italian emergency kit (meatballs) and chocolate, so I will be good. Still sorting out work (we're open), so may need to take a day - since I can't get there.

  2. My office in Manhattan has closed for weather for Monday, and sounds like will also be Tuesday. Have plenty of food/beverage, and to be on the safe side, have a bunch of water socked away. My two concerns are possibility of a power loss (unlikely because the grid is underground/buried in Manhattan) and a window breaking (I've got double pane and am in relatively new construction, so not too worried).

My office in Parsippany, NJ is closed tomorrow, and all of the school districts around us here in Montgomery County, PA are closed at least tomorrow and some on Tuesday as well. We've been baking and watching movies.

All of our tri-state offices closed. Including Parsippany, Heather! But in days of mobile workforce, still expected to work. On another note, Cassandra Wilson cover of post title song is awesome.

  5. I did my shopping Thursday night. Then some on Saturday. Then some today. I think I may have overdone it, but I generally live bachelor-style, meaning that I can't go more than a meal or two without supplies. So now I'm living more like a normal person, at least for the time being.

  6. We did most of our prep Thurs/Fri, with a CVS run on Saturday. Now the husband wants to head to Whole Foods tomorrow to see if anything is left.

Like most of DC, my office is closed tomorrow. Will likely do some work from home, if Sandy allows me.

  7. I've never been more thankful to work for a technologically-behind-the-times organization...all of my work stuff is at work, so I won't be able to touch it until at least Tuesday (looking possibly like Wednesday.) Hunkering down with many bottles of red wine, a fully-charged and stocked Kindle, and pots full of water.

If anyone wants to hop in the car and head West, I'm happy to play hostess in hurricane-less Chicago. I am completely serious.

  9. I have interviews booked for my show in NY on Friday, so I hope everything is completely resolved by then, for y'all's sake, and mine. Stay safe! I'm a teensy bit jealous about getting to miss work.

My work just outside of DC is closed, but I am teleworking (a proposal is still technically due today). My husband was considered emergency personnel until last night, when the government changed its mind, so I'm grateful he'll be home with us. We plan to cook, bake, watch movies and play Minecraft until the power goes out, then we'll head downstairs to read, play board games, and sleep in front of the fireplace. I'm eyeing a few trees in our neighborhood and trying to calm down the dog.

  11. Good luck everybody. May your power outages be shorter than your laptop and cable backup power's lives. Now the threadjack: Fuck Fox. Tony Bennett and Aretha Franklin get shut out from the national anthems for Fox promotional celebrity singers? Kinda glad they lost the EPL to NBC yesterday. Can baseball be next? Please?

  12. Charge all of your battery packs while you can, including those for your powertools. You never know.

So far, just lots of wind in my part of Brooklyn -- luckily, I live in the highest part, as there seems to already be quite a bit of flooding in Red Hook, the Navy Yard, etc. I think there's a good chance schools are closed tomorrow too (especially since the MTA Chairman said he doesn't think the subway will be running), so I'm looking forward to some time to catch up with stuff on my DVR and Nook.

Storm windows up, potential projectiles removed from outside, cars gassed up, electronics charged, copper wire landline plugged in, flashlights and batteries ready, cases of water and non-perishable food that doesn't need to be heated bought, dishes and clothes washed.

Pro tip: fill up your bathtub with water and have a bucket on hand. Even if you lose water, you can keep the toilets running for days.

I've also got a fridge full of craft beer, a stack of books yet to be read, candles, firewood and old laptops which are now battery powered DVD players. I am so ready for this.

Hopefully, being in a neighborhood with Heights or Hill in the title means that we're likely to avoid immediate flooding. Hopefully power and internet will stay on throughout, and if so, I'll be happy to ride out the storm with TV and internet. And of course, the bar is fully stocked, though the drinking light won't be lit until after working from home ceases.

Fine here in NoVa, thinking of all of you in NYC and environs, and other coastal folk.

I couldn't comment yesterday (work computer doesn't like this new system), but I wanted to let y'all know I'm thinking of you. Hope y'all are doing okay and are staying safe.
