RACHEL ZEVITA, COME BACK! As a reminder to the veterans (and in case new visitors were wondering), while this blog promises (and delivers) the best American Idol team coverage you'll find on any website averaging around 10,000 visits/week, we don't generally cover the audition rounds on a show-by-show basis absent something as awesome as the second coming of twee urchin Josiah Leming. There's just too much crap to fast-forward past, which is why we rely on friends like Dan Fienberg to recap these early episodes to find out if The Next American Idol may be sitting on the TiVo -- and phrases such as "he's like an Italian Taylor Hicks" suggest I haven't missed anything. Did I? [Use this thread for tonight's episode as well.]

Was it just me, or did you detect a subtle movement to more warm and fuzzy as opposed to "I wonder what menatl illness that guy has"-type stuff? It was defintiely more inspirational in tone musically speaking. It also seemed faster paced.

girard31 - Given that we had *three* characters from big, spirited ethnic families and *two* 16-year-old girls supportive of ailing or "different" family members, yeah we were definitely in more "inspiration" territory last night. To my mind, the only memorable bad audition, Pouty Clark Kent, was 100 percent a put-on...

  3. The girl with the grandma suffering from Alzheimer's sounded quite a bit like Kelly Clarkson, but it was only one song so who knows. (Also, since we're currently going through a similar situation with my grandma I was basically in tears during that segment and will readily admit I am biased. Luckily the girl can sing.)

The guy who had cancer was really cute and didn't have a bad voice.

There was also a girl from Long Island who was pretty good and a few others who may emerge later but for now blend into that "pretty good voice but can't tell you apart from anyone else at this point" group.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I thought Seacrest looked hot last night. Obviously I need to get out more.

  4. The one thing I liked, FFing around, was the snippet of the guy singing "Run Freedom Run" from Urinetown (the musical, not the town).

  5. It was just how I like my early Idol - very heavy on the warm and fuzzy.  I prefer knowing more about the contestants we may be seeing for longer.

The only other note - I tuned in a little bit late, but the show was almost completely over before I noticed that Paula was missing.  I thought I'd miss her, but it was kind of nice not to have to spend so much time cringing in embarrassment when she talked.

You know who else was missing?  Posh Spice.  I thought maybe they gave her a non-speaking role because she doesn't have a SAG card.

  7. Oh, you mean Posh was missing because she didn't talk much.  I thought you couldn't see her because she hasn't eaten in ten years.

Maybe she had her larynx removed to lose weight.

Y'all?  Apparently, the Atlanta auditions were held two blocks from my condo.  That building is where I would go to get Starbucks when I was still living there.
