COME FOR THE STUHLBARG; STAY FOR THE MIDGET BOXING: I'm certainly interested enough in Boardwalk Empire to stick with it for awhile; Sepinwall, MZS and Noel Murray will help explain what you just saw (as will pretty much every other tv critic of note), though I can at least add a little context for the premature baby incubators on the Boardwalk.
[Also, I did get a bit of an Roman-Moronie-from-Johnny-Dangerously vibe from Big Jim Colosimo, but we'll see if that's much of a problem going forward. Also, only once during in the episode did I look at Buscemi and say to the screen shut the f-ck up, Donny.]
Both of us shouted "OMAR COMIN'" during Michael K. William's scene. Side note: how many awesome actors named Michael can one fit into a single TV show?
ReplyDeleteWas that premature baby CGI or a muppet? Either way, not quite sure it worked.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise quite awesome. And what has Dabney Coleman been doing? Missed him.
More observations:
ReplyDelete1. I hope Nucky's manservant proves to have positive attributes, and not just be the Ms. Blankenship of the show.
2. The CGI of the Boardwalk is flawless. You can't see the seams.
3. Please, less exposition next time, though the phone booth "hey, who's that again?" scene was helpful. Homburg.
My chief worry with the show remains how/whether it can last as a series. Yes, a 10 hour miniseries? Completely credible. But 40-50 episodes (a 4-5 "season" run by HBO standards)? Can we get that much story out of it? (I also had some issues with the level of anviliciousness on the "moralizing politicians are sometimes two-faced" theme.)
ReplyDeleteOn an unrelated note, I've never read any of the "Game Of Thrones" books, but the production values on that look incredible--will be interesting to see how that pans out.
Well, I don't have HBO - actually, I don't have a TV right now- so I am forced to spend my free time outside. Anyway, I went biking yesterday and saw the BE set in Greenpoint. You can only see a part of it, because they're not filming right now, but it's pretty cool. It's basically made of shipping containers on one side and then wood frames on the other. A part of the skyline is behind it but otherwise, they have clear shots.
ReplyDeleteThose of you not watching the 6th inning of "Joe Morgan talks about a completely different game while there's baseball on" (coming between the end of the 1st half of football and the start of Mad Men) missed him claiming that not only should C.C. Sabathia win the AL Cy Young by sole virtue of the number of wins, but that he was more cost effective than his potential competitors for said honor. (CC makes slightly in excess of 3 times what Felix Hernandez makes this year.)
ReplyDeleteHow I wish I could just laugh at him without it getting to me. . . by the way, your post works as a nice stealth promotion for the Fire Joe Morgan guys taking over Deadspin sometime this week (Wednesday, I think)
ReplyDeleteSo looking forward to Game of Thrones. Based on MoRyan and Sepinwall's promotion of the books I've just spent the last six weeks devouring the first four novels. Totally hooked on the dragon-crack.
