DONDE ESTA LA BIBLIOTECA? We're used to aggressive footnoting of shows like
Treme and
Mad Men to explain the historical and local references at issue, but you don't normally need them for a comedy. However, for
Community, it certainly helps, and Vulture gives us
Dan Harmon's annotation of last night's excellent season premiere (seriously, the "study group waking up" tracking shot that opened was damn impressive).
I'd have to rewatch to make sure, but I seriously doubt Vulture's assertion that Harmon's piece annotates every reference. Actually, I don't have to check, because he's conspicuously politic in not identifying the obvious Shit My Dad Says references. But I think there are others.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, hilarious episode. "Defend yourself with respect."
Yeah, and much brilliance in delivery as well--Annie's beat and shift of magazines in her exchange with Jeff was awesome, though I would kind of love to read National Review's dating column. (Overly easy joke referencing a particular political candidate redacted.)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed that episode. This show pretty much hits every comedic sweet spot I have (especially the bits of dialogue and reaction business going on in the margins of the study group scene) It's to the point now, for me, that it's almost unfair to watch 30 Rock and the Office after Community, because they almost can't help but pale in comparison.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. Little stuff like when Britta surprises the group while they're talking about Toy Story 3 and everybody says a version of "hello" at the same time, but Troy says "Hi, Toy Story 3." Donald Glover may be the world champion of unexpected peripheral vision funniness.
ReplyDeleteYes, Glover is amazing. I almost wish they'd go NFL films style and have a DVD extra with a camera just focused on him throughout. Alison Brie also seems to be especially good at that sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite throwaways is in the pool episode last year, when, after Jeff has ripped off his underpants, Alison Brie covers her eyes, but opens her hand enough to see. Annie may be sweet and innocent in a lot of ways, but she ain't all sugar and spice and everything nice.
ReplyDeleteSuch, such a big fan of this show. You can watch it 3-4 times and not get it all. Every actor brings something different to it. And so happy they didn't make Betty White a dirty old lady, but a real character.
