AMERICA VOTED: And Alan and I may have seen this one coming.

Check out Alan's tiers. And my slightly less accurate analysis. Yup, it was Big Mike's time to go (no bottom two), and Crystal, Lee and The Outlaw Casey James constitute your decidedly uninspiring final three.

  1. I'd bet money that Crystal was not in the bottom three. They just wanted to motivate her fanbase.

I really regret that Fantasia's performance did not result in the same reaction from Simon as her Season 7 performance did.

I think it's the right final three, given the contestants in this year's top twelve. I really liked Big Mike and he deserved credit for doing more to remix his songs than other contestants, but I didn't think he was exciting. I continue to think that Crystal is obviously the Next American Idol, which probably means that Lee will win. I think Lee has a great voice -- interesting, rough, sexy -- but he's so much less accomplished than Crystal as a performer and an artist that I will be sad if he wins.

Do they get to choose their own songs next week? I'm really waiting for Crystal to pull out something back in her singer-songwriter-folkie-rock wheelhouse.

  3. I suspect that this year they'll do it the same way as last year---one "judge's choice" and one "contestant's choice."

Wasn't there a time when the top three had a judge's choice, a contestant's choice, and a producer choice? I miss the days when the contestants got to actually sing more.

  5. Yup. Stupid judges talking too much. Just like last year, we lost a song apiece Top 5 week, we got duets instead of a song apiece Top 4 week, and smart money says that we lose a song apiece Top 3 week.

This is really not the "correct" final three. Big Mike, in my opinion was the second best performer this year. In any tier system he should be in the final 3, because he could "win it" in a just world. I would put Siobhan as Numero Tres above either of the two clowns left with Chrystal and Lee as 4. I don't know who else I would put over Casey, but I know there were at least one or two along the way who were more deserving than he. Who the hell is voting for that guy? Is he really that pretty. He seems to have a reality distortion field to rival the one Jobs uses...

I don't know that there really was a clearcut "top 3" this year. Or even really a clearcut "top 2" this year. There was one person who was clearly and consistently strong---Crystal. And then there were a pack of people who were very inconsistent but had at least 1 or 2 highlights (Casey, Lee, Mike, and Siobhan). I tend to think that any of those four had an argument for being in the top 3 or even the top 2---it all depends on taste.

  9. Which, structurally, makes this like the Fantasia season with a stronger second tier.

Which makes sense. I have a theory that Idol repeats itself every three seasons, and this season strikes me as having some strong similarities to Seasons 3 and 6.

Sorry Charlie, Idol doesn't want Idols with good taste, Idol wants Idols that taste good. I don't know why I'm typing this. Maybe my computer was abducted by aliens, like Jose Chung who is from outer space.
