SHE IS TELLING THEM HER INTENTIONS AS TO WHETHER SHE WILL BE GOING: Twenty-four entered the IdolDome tonight; only 13 now retain hopes of becoming Your Next American Idol. Fienberg has the recap, and we hope to be adding some analysis from a welcome source.

  1. The only true disappointment for me was Lauren Turner going home; the rest, they either got more or less right (from what I can tell -- Julie, maybe) or I jut don't care enough because Those Who Can Win were safe and fine.

Bad night for Hebrews, though, with Loewentern, Rosen and Zevita going home. Only Casey Abrams (just presuming here) survives to disappoint his parents by not becoming a cantor. And the WC, as with the last two times it was used (season 3 and 8), primarily exists to provide the racial diversity which America's vote did not. (Which, had I anticipated it, would have led to a better than 8/13 prediction in the HitFix pool.)

  2. On the plus side, the eight contestants I had as "Sure Things to Make the Final" were all voted in by America. And I *should* have had Karen, but bumped her down at the last minute. But Haley? That was a shocker.

On the minus side, I overthought the wild card picks, especially after seeing the Dial Idol predictions, which led me to inexplicably put Tatynisa too high on the list. (I did consider the racial diversity aspect, Adam, but picked her over Ashthon. Doh.) I managed to get two of the three wild cards, so I'll happily take my 10 of 13... or, rather, 8 of 11 correct eliminations.

  3. My only real disappointment is Lauren Turner. I'd exchange Lauren for Haley (preferably), Karen, or Ashthon in a heartbeat. I might have otherwise chosen things differently, but there really isn't anyone else that I'd say, wow, I really am intrigued to see what s/he would have done in the future.

I would have gone with Kendra over Haley. I wouldn't have had a problem with Lauren over Haley instead.

Only disappointment for me was Lauren Turner. I'm not on board with Ashthon. More style than substance there. All in all, though, a pretty strong group.

I don't get the Lauren Turner love. When the closest comparable seems to be Bette Midler, who hasn't been relevant to the pop charts in a decade or more, did you really think she was going to be The Next American Idol?

  7. Of course not, but twelve of them won't be. I just think she'd be more fun to have around for a bit.

Yup. One of the reasons that the last two years were frustrating was that the bottom tiers (so to speak) were full of a lot of people who could not sing and who didn't seem capable of giving us an interesting performance. That certainly is the reason why I don't look fondly on Season 8, even though the top four that year was strong. Contrast that with Season 7, where most of the finalists gave us at least one really good performance. Well, not Kristy Lee Cook. But I did say "most."

  9. I hit all 10 of the viewer picks and 11/13 overall in Alan's fantasy pool. I had Jovany instead of Stefano. They are pretty interchangeable. I thought Jovany was more interesting but I guess cuter won the day. I also had Julie over Naima. I thought they would go for the Glee copycat over the "exotic flower", glad I was wrong on that one.

I have to say my 10 and 12 year old nieces and their friends love Scotty and they are in no way country fans. I think he has it in the bag. I am hoping they put him in a Hawaiian shirt and have him sing Margaritaville.

Ditto here on the Scotty love despite not being country fans -- he could seriously be on the radio this second.
