added: With Russian's victory over Spain this morning in men's basketball, Operation Chaos is on. Assuming Brazil (2-1) beats China (0-3) today Because Brazil (now 3-1) beat China (0-4) today, Monday's Spain-Brazil (3pm EDT) game is for all the marbles ... in reverse. Loser finishes third in Group B, but gets to face teams A2 (likely France) then B1/A4 winner (likely Russia) before the Gold Medal game; the winner is rewarded with a slot in the bracket with teams A3 (likely Argentina) and then the A1/B4 winner (USA) before the Gold Medal game. In other words, welcome to Tanksville.
just in case: BB SPOILER
ReplyDeleteGot caught up in the possible Lithuania upset, but give the US men's team half a step and the power and grace is stunning. Great shooting by Lithuania, because it didn't look like the US was slacking on defense.
Slightly related: Anyone familiar with Red Letter Media's Plinkett reviews? They just released a commentary track for STAR WARS and I listened to it while watching the BB game -- Kryskewski sounds like a nasally Plinkett. Now I'll think of Kryskewski game-planning in his basement of terror while eating pizza rolls.
Was reminded of Aimee Mullins's terrific piece on The Moth about her experience as an amputee (and runner and model and spokesperson and all-around awesome person). It's Segment 1 here: http://www.prx.org/pieces/61438
ReplyDeleteI get excited every time they play the Briscoe County Jr. theme. It's so epic. That show was really before its time. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been canceled after one season if it were on now, but the internet would be all over it.
ReplyDeleteSPOILER, though doubtful it would air, for lomg jump:
ReplyDeleteTin Tin just won a gold medal!
The commentators obviously loved saying Kromowidjojo. And I was kind of drunk by that time (my inlaws are here, they are Finnish, we drink vodka), so me and Mr. Gleemonex were all "Mojogogo! Kromo-va-jay-jay! Kajagoogoo! Kamanyawannalayme!" Etc., ad infinitum, and laughing our drunk faces off. We KILLED it, me and him. Killed.
ReplyDeleteI loved watching the 10K race today, and (from the DVR)' the first half of the heptathlon. Today reminded me why I love having a day to be home and watch the Olympics. Also, I cleaned out my closet and dresser. Goodwill will also be happy about today.
ReplyDeleteThe 10K was pretty damn awesome.
ReplyDeleteDefinite contender for my favorite Olympic piece: http://www.slate.com/blogs/five_ring_circus/2012/08/04/samuel_l_jackson_olympics_a_field_guide_to_the_actor_s_tweets_on_the_london_games_.html
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the Kromowidjojo piece - not only did I enjoy it, after reading it I got to sound smart at dinner tonight.
ReplyDeleteThought NBC did a good job of not speaking and just letting us watch Farah's reactions and hear the crowd's excitement.
ReplyDeleteIf increasing PED enforcement were causing decreasing PED use in track and field, then all marks, and not just long jump, would be decreasing. How would they explain how fast everybody was in the 100? Sure, they didn't run a WR (and nobody has beat the 100 mark since 2009), but the whole field was so fast, and the entrants basically had to beat what was the WR until 20 or so years ago just to get into the final. The argument just doesn't make sense.
