DON'T DON'T DON'T DON'T: Death Cab (and is it just me or does Zooey Deschanel-era Ben Gibbard look like an entirely different person?), covering "Don't You Forget About Me" in front of a giant montage for the Critic's Choice Awards tribute to John Hughes on VH1 (you might have to expand the story at the bottom of the link to get the video).
That's all.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Isaac, that was pretty great. Watching it made me realize that I'd never actually paid attention to the non-chorus lyrics before, and that "love's strange, so real in the dark" is a nice bit of writing.
ReplyDeleteI think he looks different from the Ben of the last two years. Mainly, he's cut his hair. It is an improvement.
ReplyDeleteOh, I wanted so much to like this. I usually like Gibbard, but the first notes just turned me completely off. I appreciate the sentiment, of course.
ReplyDeleteI just heard a track from the album Gibbard did with Jay Farrar. Good stuff, that.
Here's a great pic of Amy Poehler and John Krasinski doing a Pretty in Pink tribute. Amy's prom dress is pretty close to spot-on, but I don't remember Duckie's pants being rolled up so high? Maybe it's just my memory...

I think the vegan diet has taken about 15-20 pounds, too, and the absence of glasses at the edge of his bangs makes his face look less square.
ReplyDeleteI also had trouble getting into it due to the rough intro. And I usually quite like Death Cab for Cutie and think that they (and Ben Gibbard, solo) choose good covers. Sigh
ReplyDeleteNow that we have a music thread, will y'all be unhappy with me
Oh how I love Death Cab. Little Bribes is on constant repeat in our house these days.
ReplyDeleteHe's clearly dropped some weight. And losing the glasses was in my view a mistake - he's starting to just look like a rock and roll star. Which isnt really what he is.
ReplyDeleteBut moreover: Good Lord, how much work must Walla do during production to get him in TUNE? Every time they play live, he's flat. They either need to get better monitors or give him earphones so he can hear himself better. Or something. It's crushing.
