I was in Beijing last April and part of our tour was a visit to the Bird's Nest. It was FILLED with tourists (we were some of the only westerners among them), and it certainly seemed like they would be able to make a go of it as a tourist attraction. How disappointing that that incredible architecture might go to waste.
There's a long and proud tradition of temporary architecture, built for World's Fairs or expositions or festivals or just for the hell of it (does Aldo Rossi's floating tower still survive?) Nothing wrong with that.
That's really sad. One of the things I love about Lake Placid is how this little tiny town took their fabulous Olympic venues and turned themselves into an Olympic training ground (and the local area became a breeding ground for Olympic talent). Sad that China is letting these architectural marvels languish.
