Clearly none of you were girls in the early 90s because my friends and I were all obsessed with Newsies. And we're all excited now that they're making a stage musical.
I agree - I think one's reaction to this news is entirely demographic-dependant. I was an 8 year old girl when this movie came out and probably saw it 20 times on VHS. It might not be any sort of high art, but I'm pretty excited to see this on stage when I can.
I'm with the ladies, Newsies is awesome. We got it for my mom on DVD five years ago and we still watch it WITH KARAOKE LIKE LYRICS ON THE SCREEN! And we are pumped that this will happen because it should.
Put me on the list of females who were preteens when Newsies came out and are obsessed with the movie. But as a total outlier, my 30something brother is also a huge fan. Can't wait to make it a brother sister outing!
My extended family does a dvd pirate pollyana every January-- Newsies was the most stolen movie this year. I was 14 when it came out. I can't wait to tell my sisters and cousins about the Broadway show possibilities. My sister was totally obsessed with Gabriel Damon (Spot Conlon) and my admiration for Ele Keats as Sarah should have helped me realize I was a lesbian a year before I did!
I am taking a 3 hour drive to see this on Sunday in New Jersey, with my sister, and my cousin and his wife and we are all super excited! I think I too was around 12 when the movie came out and have owned it on VHS and DVD.
Oh man, now I feel old. One of my best friends in high school was OBSESSED with both Newsies and Swing Kids. I can't even tell you how many times I've seen both movies. (and now she works in theatre...coincidence? Her head is EXPLODING right now.)
If I may quote the great Bender: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
ReplyDeleteOh, for fuck's sake.

ReplyDeleteOh wait, they were serious. Let me laugh harder. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

ReplyDeleteI've never seen Newsies, but in general am in favor of new Alan Menken musicals on Broadway.

ReplyDeleteI always assumed the movie was based on a Broadway play already.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Courtney and JL - as a young girl when the film came out, I am SO excited for this musical. Suck it, haters. ;)

ReplyDeleteUm, I am just shocked that you didn't know about this already. It has been highly anticipated in my circles for months now.
