STUDS TERKEL WOULD BE PROUD: Look, I enjoyed the oral histories of
SNL, ESPN,
and MTV, but did we really need a
lengthy newspaper oral history of One Tree Hill, which ends its nine season run tomorrow night without my having seen a single episode? If anyone wants to argue that the show's an overlooked gem, this is the place to do it.
Honestly, I was surprised it was still on. A couple of years ago, I had a roommate from Ireland for about 6 months. Nice guy, but he for some reason was fascinated by the show and would watch reruns like crazy. Yeah, I'm judging. Every moment I saw of it looked like Veronica Mars without the Veronica, like a show inhabited entirely by Duncan Kanes.
ReplyDelete
I have never seen a single episode of One Tree Hill's nine (??) seasons, but the internet coughed up this clip a couple years ago ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzPDEirVTZk ) and it did make me laugh.

ReplyDeleteMy co-clerk (a guy) — in most respects a pop-culture enthusiast of exquisite taste — loved it. I could never bring myself to watch.
ReplyDeleteThat, after an incredibly long day at the office just made me spill coffee all over myself.
ReplyDeleteGenius
Yes, there were a few clips that made the Soup--that one, "Stay out of it, Nick Lachey!," and "What are you doing here, Dave Navarro," leading the list.
ReplyDeleteMy god, the expression on his face..."My...hy heart. Oh my stars and garters." That's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWait, Marcotte hasn't seen "One Tree Hill"? That's it; I'm putting you on warning for revocation of your teenage girl card.
ReplyDeleteI went through a One Tree Hill phase when I was 14. I may have cried during the school shooter episode...
ReplyDeleteI tried to do TWOP-style recaps of this for a season and a half in the early days of the Preschool. I think my favorite character was Millie the assistant, who the show tried to make us believe was unattractive by a) giving her glasses b) having other characters comment on how she was wearing last season's clothes c) standing her next to Sophia Bush as often as possible. One of those things was effective.
