KIDS, YOU'VE BEEN VERY, VERY PATIENT: Okay. So I probably have only seen 5-6 episodes of HIMYM this season, but I did see last night's, and at least the end is in sight. Question: as to which occupational track is HIMYM less realistic -- academia or the judiciary?

added: Sepinwall with more news on how the final season will play out.

Judiciary. I've known people who have fallen into academia (as have you) even at elite schools. No one ends up a judge like that. Ever.

I'll reserve judgment on the final season until I see it. Yes, the show isn't what it once was, but I'm certainly nowhere near hate-watching it. It still makes me laugh, and I'm still invested in these characters. And one of the things I love about the show has always been its wacky experiments with form, so I'm willing to follow them where they lead next season. As we're seen before - having an end date can bring out the best in showrunners and writers.

  2. I'm sure the writers could have come up with a more realistic career-advancement plan for Marshall than that. (Wait, who am I kidding? Why should I trust the HIMYM writers to do ANYTHING realistic? They thought TED'S GOLIATH BUILDING was good.) I'm fine with introducing Marshall/Lily/Rome conflict... but come the eff on.

As for the reveal of the mother, I'll admit: they had me back on board with that scene. And then they may have lost me again with the nonsense about how season 9 will play out.

(And nope, I still don't care about Robin and Barney as a couple.)

I'm sorry, can someone give me the thumbnail of how Marshall became a judge? I haven't watched an episode of the last couple of seasons...

  4. So, serious question here (and spoilers for those who haven't seen the last couple of episodes): We have known for a long time that Robin is not The Mother. But do we know that she and Ted are not together in 2030? It's a serious question, because maybe Saget-as-Ted has quashed that possibility. But if not, I can foresee a scenario in which Robin bails on the wedding (or goes through with it but it doesn't pan out), Mother marries Ted, gives birth, and dies, and Ted winds up with Robin. Then Ted is telling his kids about how he met their dead mother (there have been some subtle hints that this part is true), and he's a douchebag about it, because 8/9 of the story is about other things and other women, but Ted being a douchebag has never stopped them before.

I recognize this all sounds somewhat silly, but the last two episodes have really hammered on how Robin and Ted are actually right for each other. (Also, whatever happens, it's going to be awkward for the kids to know that the reason dad met mom was that he was so depressed about losing another woman that he had to high-tail it out of town and leave his whole life behind.)

He calls her Aunt Robin a bunch in the narration, throughout the series. Which doesn't rule it out, but might still be weird.

How is Lily's occupational travel from Kindergarten teacher to Art Buyer an in any way realistic job path EVEN if she knows the Captain?! The jobs are even less realistic than their apartments.

Yeah, I'm only hate watching it at this point. Often while giving it the finger. The mother looks adorable, and I hate her already.

  8. I thought about that, but don't we all know of post-divorce couples in which the new girlfriend gets called "Aunt ___," just as a good family friend might (i.e., just as he would otherwise be using the term for her)?

  9. I really want to, but I fear that I would lose I.Q. points even trying.

I choose to believe the GNB building was always intended to be terrible.

  11. I think it's obvious that Marshall is being appointed to the seat once held by the Honorable Judge Harold T. Stone, and is receiving it in much that same way that Harry did.

The implausibility of Ted's path to professor of architecture should not be overlooked.

I actually have never known a single couple where the kids call daddy's new girlfriend "Aunt." I would find that completely bizarre.

  14. What if she had previously been a good friend whom they called Aunt? Would they stop calling her Aunt because she had become dad's girlfriend?

    Yes. way too creepy otherwise.

  16. Interesting. Not my experience.

  17. (Of course, if we're talking about creepy, a huge long story about all the women he's been with, all the weird things "Uncle Barney" did in his youth, and all the time dad spent pining for Aunt Robin pretty much blows anything else out of the water at this point.)

What's sad is that at one point, I really, really, REALLY did. And now I really don't.

When they jumped from roof to roof-deck a few seasons ago, I had the sense that they would be this really fun, paint-ball playing, whiskey drinking, most-unconventional-but-fun-couple-in-the-world couple, based on who the characters *actually* were and how they fit together. And then the show just squandered that and turned them into an season long episode of Yes Dear and made them miserable to watch together. And saddled us with lame Ted & not-the-mother dating stories. And ruined Marshall and Lilypads, IDK, adorableness. And now, I Just.Don't.Care. Not since Heroes has a show I loved and jonesed on so much become a show I hate so much, while it was still airing. It even topped the sucking the life out of The X-Files for me. (Lost came close in the "show that I came to like much less after seeing the final episode" category, but that's a different thing.)

Oh, and "the mother" looks like a perfect match for Ted....about 10 seasons ago.

She seemed kind of young to me, so I googled the actress and she's 11 years younger than Josh Radnor, which at this stage, makes any "meet cute" start to move into "meet creepy" territory for me.
