GOT TO. THIS AMERICA, MAN: Two years ago, a bunch of us made a New Years' resolution to watch The Wire already, all of it, and fourteen months later we had completed our epic journey through Baltimore's corners, police rooms, schools, and docks. (We're not talking about The Sun, ok?)
I am game for a new group quest for 2014, and am open for nominees. Ideally, the show should be available on Netflix, Amazon Prime streaming, or HBO GO. Maybe Homeland, which I've never seen, but I gather we may want to stop after season 1? Am willing to go for non-recent series as well. Tell me what you think.
I have a personal goal to get through Breaking Bad, but I imagine all of you have already done that.
ReplyDeleteI could watch Friday Night Lights, Terriers, or Alias again. I'm thinking of introducing my 13-year-old spy-loving daughter to Sydney Bristow.
ReplyDeleteI have Kidnapped on my streaming list. I hear good things.
I would really love to watch Now and Again again, but I don't know if it's streaming anywhere.
It's almost impossible for a series to both be long enough to flesh out its characters for emotional depth--and finish their narrative arc, but not so long that it starts to lose some of the quality that once made it great. Slings and Arrows made it look easy.
ReplyDeleteHeh. I'm so lazy. I'm still trying to get through The Wire. At least with the new iPad, I can watch on the treadmill! I will catch up to you guys eventually!
ReplyDeleteI've had the Deadwood blu-rays for, like, three years now. One of these years, I'll get to them - a group watch/rewatch could be just the thing to inspire me.
ReplyDeleteI will re-watch Deadwood anywhere, any time.
ReplyDeleteI"m going way out into left field and suggesting i that I have never seen a single episode of Barney Miller, and am told that I really, really shouLD.
ReplyDeleteI am also currently rewatching Veronica Mars, which is a ton of fun.
We just started Doctor Who with the kids (12.5 and almost 10) -- we jumped in completely cold at what Amazon Prime calls Season 7.1 (Matt Smith), and we're all hooked (despite being interrupted by vacation travels). Figure we can go forward or (more likely) backward once we get through S7.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Justified?
ReplyDeleteI've started on Deadwood a couple of times and haven't yet made it out of season 1, despite enjoying it quite a lot.
ReplyDeleteTerriers, which very few people watched on TV, was excellent and worthwhile discovering and discussing.
I'll throw out my favorite- Freaks and Geeks. I'm always looking for a reason/ excuse to watch again.
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion is Buffy, but that's totally because I want a force to push me over and prompt me to start it. (I'd also strongly consider doing Deadwood; I'm in the same position as Andrew. And Justified, too.)
ReplyDeleteMe too. I bought all the Wire episodes on iTunes when we made the resolution, and that is the last concrete step I took toward fulfilling it.
ReplyDeleteI'm on board with Deadwood as well, since I'm only three episodes in.
ReplyDeleteRuss: stay tuned for a Buffy-related announcement from us good folks at Try It, You'll Like It!
ReplyDelete1. Is Homeland available on any of the major streaming platforms? (I've seen Season 1 and Season 3, but not Season 2.)
ReplyDelete2. One that's a little off the wall? Felicity--all four seasons are on Amazon, and with Russell and Foley both having somewhat of career renaissances, might be interesting.
Deadwood also gives you an excuse to link to Sepinwall's summer revisits, with comments by a few cast members, including copious, wonderful reminisces by Jim Beaver.
ReplyDeleteHomeland -- all 3 seasons -- available on Showtime on Demand. And "24," which is available on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteAfter finishing "24," I'm tackling "The Wire." Kudos to you!
Sorry, it was a fumble. ;-p How many boards DO you comment on? There's probably some Newcastle boards out there as well that you haunt along with Deadspin and Fark.
ReplyDeleteJust started watching Buffy earlier this year, we're in Season 4 now and enjoying it very much! In case you need an extra push. It's funnier than I'd realized.
ReplyDeleteMuch like with the treadmill, throwing money at the resolution does not fulfill the resolution ("My gym membership keeps deducting from my check but I am not thinner!" - Me, every damn time). :-)
ReplyDeleteDamages is also an excellent series.
ReplyDeleteNot. Homeland. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteWe acquired the West Wing, but have yet to watch it. It may not satisfy the "consistent quality from season to season" thing, though. Deadwood sounds like an intriguing thought.
Go back. Start with S1. Russell Davies vision of the Doctor is delicious!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shonda - I'll push for it with the kiddos!
ReplyDeleteIf you need still another extra push, all 7 seasons are on Amazon Prime.
ReplyDeleteIf you need still another extra push, all 7 seasons of Buffy are available on Amazon Prime.
ReplyDeleteI just started Doctor Who as well - totally awesome Not doing it with kids or spouse, just getting sucked in on my own. Saw a random episode first (a Matt Smith christmas special) and then went back to start at reboot season 1.
