THE SAGGIES:  Nominations for the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced, with lots of potential love spread in many of the places you'd have expected (12 Years a Slave, The Butler, August: Osage County, Captain Phillips), and if you thought we had finally passed the statute of limitations on awards for Behind the Candelabra or 30 Rock, apparently, not quite yet.

[Dan Fienberg notes, however: zero love for this season of Mad Men.]

  1. 1. Please remember that by order of an arbitration panel, it is "Lee Daniels' The Butler," not merely "The Butler."
    2. Because Gravity is basically a one-woman show, it doesn't do so well here (in particular, nominating it for "Best Ensemble," the SAG equivalent of Best Picture, would've been kind of laughable, since there are two parts in the film). Will be interesting to see if the acting branch has issues with that.
    3. The biggest surprises? Supporting Actor/Film--Bruhl and Abdi get in, but no Hanks for Saving Mr. Banks or Cooper for American Hustle.
    4. Other big snubs? Nada for Wolf of Wall Street, Llewyn Davis, or Fruitvale Station.

  2. Oh, and no Redford for All Is Lost, which, coupled with the fact that the movie has not done well at the box office, is a BIG blow to his campaign.

Completely shut out: Orange is the New Black and Orphan Black (honestly, I';m not sure if OB was eligible but It's a joint Canadian-American production so I'll err on the side of outrage).

Somehow, David Bradley is not on the ensemble list for Game of Thrones.

It's The Butler. Sorry, everyone else, I'm not calling it that other name.

Once again, apparently no one saw Stoker.

  4. I guess this is the beginning of a long season during which I will be repeatedly disappointed by entities' failure to recognize Before Midnight.

EW gave it best of the year in one of their lists. And it made top ten in the other.

  6. Before Midnight has a similar problem to Gravity, in that it's basically a two-hander, making it hard for it to get a "best ensemble." Delpy would be on my best actress ballot, but it's a hard sell.

Speaking of which, I had an acquaintance poo-poo the idea of a fourth film (not that I think it's necessary) because Delpy would be getting too old in 8-9 years. Julie Delpy is a very good looking 43.

  8. Nothing for Parks & Recreation. This makes me sad.

  9. Given the difficulty a lot of critics have had in trying to see Wolf of Wall Street before deadlines, I'm sure many SAG members just didn't have the chance to see it.

  10. And she'll probably be a very good looking 52. But wow, that is NOT a valid reason for being against a fourth movie.

I'm hoping she was trying to make some other point, because that simply made no sense to me.

  12. No Mad Men. No Parks and Rec. No Good Wife. Boo!

  13. And personally, I WANT a fourth movie. I would have been more than fine if Before Midnight hadn't been made (because Before Sunset is, as we all know, perfect) - but now that they've continued the story, they need to do it again.

I want to see what happens with the new job/or Chicago, the twins, the other kid and so on!

  15. I contemplated rewatching Before Midnight on a plane when I was flying for Thanksgiving (it was a free on-demand option) in part to see how they edited around the very long Delpy scene that would not be appropriate for airline standards.

Love that scene for just how it's a good demonstration of, "yep, married couple." Why should she bother to put a shirt on there? It's not even nudity, it's just "I'm walking around."

  17. Yes, that's what gave me some hope.

I haven't seen many of the movies yet, but I'd say Cooper doesn't necessarily deserve it for Hustle. This is work we've seen him do before. Also, the snub to Fruitvale Station is a shame. Michael B. Jordan is great in it. However, I'd say its direction is even stronger, and I bet it'll get snubbed there, too, since he's new.

It's actually made quite a few top 10 lists already: http://www.metacritic.com/feature/film-critic-top-10-lists-best-movies-of-2013

I see too few movies to intelligently comment on how it stacks up against other contenders, but I loved Before Midnight unreservedly.
