  1. Okay, you gotta love that J.K. Simmons used his Oscar speech to tell the world to call their mothers.

OK. Both twins are down, somehow. I'm happy for J. Jonah Jameson. Now he'll have to track down Peter Parker to take a picture for the Daily Bugle's front page.

  3. I always admire when the producers try to save time here and there, but it's awkward shoehorning the presentation of three Best Picture nominees into one presenter's opening.

Full disclosure: I did not know Tegan was a girl's name. I assumed Tegan and Sara were a boy and girl. I don't know why I thought that.

I know you guys love NPH, but can we talk about him? I'm only about half an hour in so far, but he's really floundering. His poor singing was only magnified by putting Anna Kendrick up with him and all his jokes are missing. It's like he doesn't know the timing of when to say the punchline.

  6. I have to agree - very sadly. He's really not a comedian. I wanted more snark in the opening number (like on the Tonys and Emmys) - from him, not Jack Black. And what was that awkward moment when he held a mic in front of Steve Carrell's face and just looked at him in silence?

So the interstitial music seems to be songs that have been Oscar-nominated (or maybe just the winners). I don;t remember them doing that before, but I really like it. It's nicely self-referential without being obtrusive, and it lets me play a little Name That Tune.

I will never get used to Idris Elba with his real accent.

    Pitch not Perfect

  11. Idris Elba is tall enough already. Why have a camera shooting him from below?

  12. There is something weird going on with the sound.

Apparently in some markets the feed kept switching over to a showing of The Social Network.

Man, this briefcase gag was not worth the 10 minutes spent on it, especially in a show that's already run over by more than half an hour.

A friend mentioned that a possible reason Elaine Stritch and Joan Rivers weren't in the montage would be if they weren't members of the Academy. If that's so, it would not be so obnoxious. Have not found if that's true.

I did not know that was Will Arnett in Val Kilmer's Batman Forever suit. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Arnett-Wore-Piece-Batman-History-Oscars-69936.html

I did not watch, but Mrs Earthling watched a bit in the other room, which brings up my greatest beef with the show -- and why I stopped bothering to watch: they're need to insert some random "Oscars Tribute to the Oscars" bit -- this year the 50th Anniversary of the Sound of Music. Before, and when I think I gave up, was once they put like 50 previous Oscar winners up on a riser, like a class picture, and scanned to each person naming them and their previous wins ("Jack Nicholson, Winner of Two Academy Awards, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and [the other one] - he was also nominate three other times --- Anna Paquin.. etc. etc.") this went on for about 15 minutes.

I would much much rather watch a Foley artist thank his Mom for buying him a tape recorder in 1982 or a screenwriter movingly talk about his 10th grade English teacher, than listen grunting noise of the Hollywood Ouroboros snacking on its own awesomeness.

From the Wiki on the 70th Anniversary Oscar Ceremony -- they did this for 70 actors. 70! Even at a tight 10 seconds a throw, that's 12 frakking minutes:

To commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the Academy Awards, 70 actors who have received both competitive and honorary awards appeared seated onstage together during a segment called Oscar's Family Album.[30] Each former winner was acknowledged by announcer Norman Rose with the films he or she won for. At the end of the segment newly minted winners Kim Bassinger, Helen Hunt, and Robin Williams joined them. This marked the largest gathering of former winners since the50th ceremony held in 1978.[31]

Not Clooney, not West, not Bale, not Kilmer. Just two, right?

Keaton, Affleck, Arnett (if voice work counts). Bale wasn't there?

Bale wasn't there. Lots and lots of stars were not there.

  22. Adam West--whereabouts unknown.
