#LONGREADS, JUNIOR EDITION:  So Lucy's going away for two weeks of sleepaway camp tomorrow, and "care packages" are not allowed ("so as not to create a culture of 'haves' and 'have-nots'") but letters are.  But I figure I can split the difference for a comics-loving (yes, she is already loaded up with Lumberjanes) blessedly nerdy 12-year-old by smuggling in fun things for her to read which aren't as large and conspicuous as books.  Any ideas?

    Not suitable for non-care-package mail, but if she hasn't read the Steve Thompson-recommended graphic novel "Roller Girl" or Raina Telgemeier's "Smile," "Sisters," and "Drama," there's still some time to pack them in her trunk... BTW, I love this post because my own love affair with comics started when my parents, recognizing that I was very nervous about two months at sleepaway camp, allowed me to buy a couple of issues of Fantastic Four to put into my own trunk.

    She's read all the Telgemeier (and we rely on Stephen for Free Comic Book Day recs every year); not sure on Roller Girl.

    Here's Stephen's recommendation, at about 28:25 in (of course) the "What's Making Us Happy" segment. My daughter, who (as you know) is roughly Lucy's age, tore through it, as she tore through the Telgemeier books. http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2015/04/10/398628583/pop-culture-happy-hour-the-comedians-and-cameo-appearances

    While you're at the comic book store, check out Mermin by Joey Weiser - it might skew right at Phoebe's age, or it might be too young. I can't say without really knowing her that well. I love the artwork and it's an Athens artist.

    Weird: I had never heard of Lumberjanes before this post, but today I received volume 1 as part of BookRiot's summer reading box.
