FAR BETTER THAN MR. SCHUSTER: We all knew Justin Timberlake had some flow, but apparently, so does Jimmy Fallon, as he and Timberpants take us on a journey from "Rapper's Delight" to "Empire State of Mind" (all backed up by the Roots, naturally). The short portion of "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" is a high point.

  1. Wow.  I may have to finally stop referring to Fallon as a "dime store mimbo."  Also, Timberlake's execution of The Humpty Dance was top notch.

When it's time to open the books again for ALOTT5MA Fave status, I think it's time to induct Timberlake already.

    That was so awesome.

  3. Timberlake's ability to vocally impersonate Snoop Dogg is also quite impressive.

  4. Jimmy Fallon just keeps on impressing me.

Of course, this brings up Andy Sandburg's question to JT this past week - "when are you going to start making music again??"

Adam -- ask yourself this:  If Jimmy Fallon had never been on SNL, how would you feel about him right now?  He has a pretty long highlight reel in a pretty short time on NBC and he kept a goofy good humor while everybody else went either dark-funny or dark-not-funny during the Leno-Conan fiasco.  It feels like forever since there's been any reason at all not to like him.

And that was a lot of fun, yes.

  6. It's been a long grudge. It's officially over.

forgiven, but can we really forget "Taxi"?

Anyways, great mash-up (aside from the terrible Biggie impression)

  8. I'm glad that my stance of "Jimmy Fallon Is A Good Late Night" host is finally being accepted by more and more people.  It's always good to know you're on the right side of history.

    That was great.

I may like Jimmy Fallon, but I can never forgive "Fever Pitch". That was a bridge too far.

It's by no means a really good movie, but I think Fever Pitch (though misguided from the start in it's switching of EPL fandom to the Red Sox) does capture the insanity of being a superfan.  In particular, the scene of them opening and divvying up the season tickets has a wonderful ritualistic feel.

However, the using the 2004 World Series for a filming moment still pisses me off.

As Travis said, the Biggie impression is dreadful and I'd gladly have given up Soulja Boy in exchange for anything Wu-Tang related. Still, it's hard not to be impressed by that.

    Give up for The Roots!

The British version of Fever Pitch with Colin Firth is actually quite good. I liked it better than the book, and I'm a big Nick Hornby fan.

  13. I don't believe there's anything Firth has done which this blog (to the extent it can be anthropomorphized and with one coherent worldview) does not like.

I've still not seen the Firth version (it's weirdly out of print), but I just have to point out how awful the DVD cover is on Amazon.

While I do enjoy his goofy good humor and think his music-related bits are, generally, fantastic,  I think the rest of the non-Roots parts of his show are pretty terrible, and his tendency for overt fawning during interviews makes me personally uncomfortable for him.  Of course, good music bits and the Roots are enough to make his show worth watching, but I'm not sure it outweighs his time on Update or the Boston sketches or the terrible grunge update of Wayne's World.

  16. I also credit him for being unabashedly geeky in his interview subject selection.  Because he's the second-tier late night guy in NYC, he doesn't always get top tier guests, but he's the only late night host who's had Felicia Day on.

Unbelievable! They rocked. It's amazing how mainstream rap has become. My 7-year-old daughter can rap better than Run DMC.

Come on, that's a little like "modern art!  My kid coulda' drawn that."

It's good. If I recall, it's much more sort of depressing than the Barrymore/Fallon remake.

  21. He started to win me over a bit with his "Saved By the Bell" and "California Dreams" obsessions/reunions. This was pretty awesome too.

It's tough holding a grudge against someone who maintains that level of enthusiasm about stuff like this.

  22. Can anyone find video of his appearance on America's Got Talent a few weeks ago? He ran through a long list of stand-up impressions, and by the end of it, I liked him that much more.
