THIS WEEK IN MY IPOD: Last Thursday, Community kicked off its season with a montage scored to the Fratellis' "Baby Fratelli," off of 2006's awesome Costello Music. Then NBC set all of its Thursday comedy promos to "Chelsea Dagger," off the same album. This is probably the best media exposure the Fratellis have ever had, and I'm glad to see it. The timing stinks, though, since they apparently broke up in April.
Commercials for It's Kind of a Funny Story (you may know it better as Boy Interrupted by Julia Roberts's Niece) are in heavy rotation, and they close with Ida Maria's "Oh My God," which tonally and lyrically is an absolutely perfect song for a movie set in an insane asylum. Do you like songs by people who sound like they're riding the crest of a nervous breakdown? This should be the second song on your playlist, behind PJ Harvey's "Rid of Me" and before the Pixies' "Hey."
The Chicago Blackhawks play "Chelsea Dagger" whenever they score a goal at home, so it was weird to see it accompanying a mugging Ed Helms on TV.
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot to mention the weird resurgence of "Short Skirt Long Jacket" by Cake -- it was already a bit long in the tooth for Josh Schwartz to make it the Chuck theme song a few years ago (though, as edited, it works really well), but it's waaaaay too old to be a song on a new iPod commercial. The iPod trendmasters are slipping.
ReplyDeleteI get that the song is a bit aged to be the centerpiece of an ipod commercial, but I do love it.
ReplyDeleteIda Maria is absolutely fantastic. Been listen to that album (name "Fortress Round My Hear" after a lyric in "Oh My God") for six months or so, and it just gets better and better. Amazing voice.
ReplyDeleteAlso, here's one of my other favorite songs off the album: a little ska-infused number called "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked"

On the topic of "It's Kind Of A Funny Story": I've heard bad reviews, which is so disappointing to me because I'm a sucker for indie-tinged dark comedies with good soundtracks. I love Keir Gilchrist from "United States Of Tara", and Zach Galifianakis is just amazing.
Not knocking the song, just saying the timing is strange.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to do better than PJ Harvey and the Pixies for this categories, but "Piece of My Heart" still qualifies.
ReplyDeleteI think Zach De La Rocha of Rage Against The Machine deserves a nomination.
ReplyDeleteBoth of those songs are on about five of my gym playlists. The drums on both play ahead of the beat, which I find keeps me moving. "Kiss With a Fist" is another one of those songs.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about the Fratellis, loved their energy.
ReplyDeleteIda Maria can rip your heart out at 100 yards, and that song worked really well in the trailer. See also [Hear also?] "Stella".
At The Drive-In!
ReplyDeleteIt's vintage! I think SSLJ is old enough that it's become a classic of sorts.
ReplyDeleteMan, I have really been away from new music for too long (I've been listening to sports radio and audiobooks, with NPR sprinkled in occasionally)... this is just awesome. Thanks for the video link!
ReplyDeleteIf it helps, the book that "It's Kind of a Funny Story" is based on is pretty decent, from what my coworkers tell me.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm probably going to love it regardless, but I'd feel better about it if it was actually good.
