<span>Wow, I actually went to imdb to see if perhaps Janney was in Grace of My Heart in a supporting role...
I would have liked them to mention Primary Colors, as that's a notable early role for her, shows her flair for physical comedy, and the one that inspired Sorkin to write for her, so he says. Loved her thoughts on The Hours, and was reminded I need to rewatch Big Night.
And I was hesitant about seeing The Help, but Janney playing Emma Stone's mother? Yeah.</span>
Yeah, the casting of Janney as Stone's mother? Pretty damn perfect. (And how about Emma Stone, Felicia Day, and Molly Quinn as bickering sisters? I'd watch that.)
As I said over at AV Club, I still remember the first time I noticed Allison Janney. American Beauty is not that great of a movie (though I maintain it nails a certain breed of Realtor, just like Glengarry nails another), but Janney just was perfect in her scenes. I could picture (though god knows I didn't want to) moments that brought her to where she was and just how much of a quiet hell her life was. "I'm sorry the place is a mess."
That song is a total b*tch to sing. The range is immense. Doesn't stop me from wailing it in the shower once a week or so, but that's one song I'll never sing in public.
'Salright. It's a great film, and Douglas is great in it. I think Allison Janney is a goddess, but I have such reservations about The Help that I don't think I can go see it even if she's in it.
They forgot one of my favorites, and the one that turned me on to Janney:

Um, that's Illeana Douglas, no Allison Janney.
ReplyDeleteYikes. Foul on me. FOUL.
ReplyDeleteAll white ladies look alike?
Women aren't funny?
I don't know, I'm just trying to say something that will make the above post look less stupid.
At least you have good taste in white girls, Paul - I love love love that movie and listen to the soundtrack all the time.

She's at some risk of becoming the canonical voice of Kaiser Permanente given how often they run those adverts around here.

ReplyDeleteSorry, I messed up the quote: "<span>Oh, my. I apologize for the way things look around here." Delivered sincerely, but so flatly.</span>
ReplyDeleteMe too. I was obsessed with God Give Me Strength for a long time.
