SO IF YOU BELIEVE IN FATHER CHRISTMAS, CHILDREN, LIKE YOUR UNCLE BILLY DOES, THEN BUY THIS FESTERING TURD OF A RECORD:: Wagering is open for this year's UK Christmas #1 single, with the favorites being (a) whoever wins UK X-Factor; (b) a choir of military wives created for a reality series; (c) Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", being re-released as a fundraiser for a UK children's charity; and (d) The Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want."

I missed the headline when I read this post and the headline is actually exactly what I thought of when reading it.

ReplyDeleteIt's a huge deal over here. The military wives song is pretty in a sentimental, women singing sort of way and the show was surprisingly touching. The Smiths song features in the John Lewis (a nice department store) Christmas ads this year, so it's getting lots of exposure through that. I've heard both of these on BBC Radio 2 fairly frequently. I hadn't even heard about the Nirvana re-release and I actively ignore most things related to X-Factor...

ReplyDeleteBased on my sister's statement below, it would be the equivalent of Vampire Weekend's "Holiday" charting off the Hilfiger ads or some other major ad campaign that was using a pop song.
