I can't figure out sometimes if SyFy is in on the joke. Sometimes I think so and they air the incredibly tongue in cheek "Jersey Shore Shark Attack," which was far funnier in a legitimate way than it needed to be. Then they announce this.
....You know, Battlestar Galactica seemed like a ridiculous idea at the time — as did the source film of this upcoming series — and with a newer outlook on global warming combined with post-Katrina/Sandy devastation, the world might be a little less likely to scoff at the concept of our continents being submerged in a unified and poisoned sea. I'm not saying it will be good, but I'll probably watch the pilot.
I imagine this will die at the point where they submit the first production budget. The fact that filming in water is incredibly difficult and expensive is what made the original the most expensive movie of all time (at the time) and did the same for Titanic a few years later. The only way I could see this working from a production standpoint is if either they make it about the inhabitants of Dryland defending their island, or they set it on a sub so most of their filming can be on soundstages. Maybe the Last Resort sets are available.
I don't know about that. BSG was SciFi's first true hit, after a bunch of false starts and a few successes relaunching shows from other networks. The nature of their time-filling may have changed a lot (you can only re-run Max Headroom so many times), but if you look at the before-after that BSG went through, the right people could make something out of this property.
PT said everything I was going to say, except that the problem with WW was execution, not content (as evidenced by the fact that WW is just floating Mad Max, and Mad Max was great).

ReplyDeleteYeah, but that was a far different channel at the time, back when it wasn't SyFy and devoted to scam shows.

ReplyDeleteWhat, did they miss out on the rights to develop Ishtar?
ReplyDeleteNo doubt they're in on the joke, when there's a joke. Mostly though they're in on the suck.

ReplyDeleteYou were going to say the Max Headroom thing too? We are of a HIVE MIND. :-)
ReplyDeleteCGI technology has come a long way thanks to all of those efforts, so that might not be as much of a concern in this century.
