IT TASTES THAT MUCH BETTER, I THINK": The Minnesota Twins' new (outdoor) baseball park will be serving pork chops on a stick, fried walleye on a stick and cheese curds among its food concessions, as well as a cheese-on-the-inside burger which carries an unfortunate local appellation which I hope is not visited upon my daughter.

"Walleye on a stick" sounds like an apocryphal sex act.
ReplyDeleteAnything-on-a-stick is big in MN; I especially enjoy key lime pie on a stick at the state fair. (Frozen, and dipped in chocolate.) The Juicy L--- is what local restaurants compete over. It's awesome. I haven't noticed a dramatically lower rate of girls with that name, but I do imagine there might be some awkward teenage moments associated with the appellation for them.
ReplyDeletePork chop on a stick is one of my MN state fair musts every year, as are the fried cheese curds. Sorry, Adam, about the naughty burger innuendo, but if you ever visit our fair city, give one a try--they're delicious. And if they're from Matt's Bar (one of the two places that claim the burger's origin), there's no "i"--it's Jucy L---, but at the 5-8 Bar its "Juicy." Cook's Country did a recipe for them a while ago.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago there was a walleye scandal around here in MN. Apparently everyone and their brother was serving walleye on the menu, when it was actually frozen zander from Europe. I'm not sure, but zander on a stick sounds about as bad as Jucy L---.

Matt's Bar was where my grampa Art would stop every day on his way home from work for a beer and a bump. Ten years after Art retired, and more than fifteen years since we'd moved out of state, my dad and I stopped in Matt's for lunch one afternoon when we were in town.
ReplyDeleteNow, I look a lot like my dad, and he looks a lot like his dad, but you can't imagine my surprise when the waitress recognized us as "Art's boys."
Now I'm back in the Cities, and you'd better believe that I eat my share of Jucys. But I'm much more of a Saints fan than a Twins fan, so it may be a while before I eat the Target Field version of the Jucy.
New Yorkers: you can get key lime pie on a stick, dipped in chocolate, at Steve's Key Lime Pies down in Red Hook. Totally delicious and you don't even have to go to a state fair!
