PERHAPS NOW WE'LL FINALLY GET THE ZANY ANIMATED 3-D ADAPTATION OF CATCHER IN THE RYE WITH SHIA LABEOUF VOICING HOLDEN CAULFIELD: J.D. Salinger is dead at the age of 91. A friend of mine on Facebook may have said it best: "Let's hope there are no phonies in heaven."
I wonder if he really has 15 unpublished novels locked in a safe -- and I wonder if any of them are any good. Wouldn't it be amazing if they were?
ReplyDeleteSo are "the three" Pernell Roberts, Zelda Rubenstein and Howard Zinn, with Salinger the first of the NEXT three? Or are we still waiting for a third actor to go with Trapper John and Tangina, and a third writer to go with Zinn and Salinger?
ReplyDeleteOr how about an actor/writer to finish both of. How is Woody Allen feeling? Sam Shepard seems pretty healthy. Ethan Hawke is way to young and we need a third "sun" film.
ReplyDeleteIt was said that Salinger blocked Hollywood from making a film version of "Catcher". Will it be made now? Who wouuld cast as Caulfield?
ReplyDeleteHa! That reminds me of the Letterman/Shaffer skit from the old NBC Late Night: "He's dead! The actor-singer is dead!" (Original here, even funnier sequel here.)
ReplyDeleteAll due respect to your Facebook friend, but The Onion actually said it best: http://www.theonion.com/content/news/bunch_of_phonies_mourn_j_d
ReplyDeleteLet's hope it means the end of forcing high school students to read that crummy novel.
ReplyDeleteWe have a third writer- Auchincloss
ReplyDeletePreach it.
ReplyDeleteAll due respect, RIP and all that, but does this change anything? Being a recluse, it's not like we'll miss his presence in the world. I just sort of feel like premorse was justified in this case since he shut himself away a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI love The Onion piece.
What was "Igby Goes Down," then?
ReplyDelete1. It's rumored that Salinger had a whole lot of completed manuscripts which he wanted to have published after his death.
ReplyDelete2. His literary heirs may change his policies on republication of certain of his works (there are a number of short stories that have never been republished/anthologized), and derivative works, including film adaptations. Also, there's the pending "Coming Through The Rye" lawsuit, which his heirs may not want to pursue in the way he did.
