Tonight's result was inevitable; this wasn't someone who was going to make the list of top 24-selling Idol artists of all time, though nor quite frankly might any of these five but-for a perfunctory winner's bump. Next week: songs of the cinema, with Jamie Foxx returning to guest mentor the same theme again, though he was thoroughly unmemorable (at best) last time. (Also of note: last year's final four was the one solo/one duet format; will we see something similar this time?)
Added: Hey, let's take a look at my original tier analysis below the fold. It's mostly holding up, and where it's wrong we know why it was wrong. I do want to note Girard31's comment back then: "Siobhan can't win. The little girls and grammas will vote her off. They'll make Casey go a long way, and Crystal reminds them of the cool mom/daughter on the block, so she could last as well. Big Mike could go the distance if he doesn't appear threatening in any way. It's the tweens and the grammas who vote, always remember that."
Doesn't Belong Here, And Will Not Be Around By The End of Passover: Tim, Aaron, Paige
Could Linger For A While, But Each Seems Too Limited To Win: Didi, Lacey, Andrew
Will Go Even Longer Than Them, And We All Like Him, But He Ain't Winning Either: Big Mike
The Wild Cards With Serious Potential To Fulfill My Theory #2, and Believe Me Alex Lambert Would Have Been Listed Here With A Bullet: Lee, Katie
My Presumptive Final Three: Siobhan, Crystal, The Outlaw Casey James -- with Siobhan winning.
Bottom two: Big Mike, Aaron. Aaron goes home, and neither Crystal nor Lee have ever been in the bottom three.
ReplyDeleteWill someone please explain Lee's appeal?
ReplyDeleteWhen Lee actually hits notes, I find his voice to be very pleasing.
ReplyDeleteThat said, isn't that a major caveat?
While the Lambert/Iraheta duet turned out well last year, I don't think that the duet thing is very fair---your chances of succeeding that week rely too much on whether you got paired up with someone who works well with you. But I could easily see them doing it again, to give the judges more time to babble.
I haven't seen the results show yet---how was Lady Gaga?
For me, I enjoy Lee's voice when he actually hits notes correctly. [A significant caveat, I know, but there it is.] I also think that he usually does a pretty good job selecting songs that work for him and have not been done too much on the Idol stage. For the judges/producers, I think that they see in Lee the closest thing to dollar signs of all of the top five finalists. Finally, I think that the show needed SOMEONE to try to trumpet as the best contender besides Crystal, and the other candidates (Casey, Mike, Siobhan) have not had the consistency and vote support that they need for that purpose.
ReplyDeleteI did not see the show yet---how was Lady Gaga?
I know I'm not the right demographic to make this kind of comment, but ... If Lady Gaga represents what is hot these days, then I think any of the final four Idol contestants could be just as good if you put out a smoke machine, surrounded them with a bunch of half-naked adrongynous dancers and threw a veil over their head. Seriously, I just don't get the hype.
ReplyDeleteGaga was very, very overwrought. I really like her, and will be seeing her live on tour later this summer, but this was just too much. When she remembers that it's about the song as much as it's about the theatricality, she stays on track. This one went off the rails.
