ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DIED, DIED: Want another reason to watch the Grammys with us Sunday night? Prince Michael, Paris and "Blanket" Jackson are scheduled to speak.

In terms of the race for second place in this year's Necrology Applause-O-Meter, the NYT has a helpful pregame show, after the break:

For me, it's all necrology (including Blanket &co) and What Will Gaga Do?

Second place contenders:  Les Paul and Mary Travers.  (More distant) fourth place contenders: Ellie Greenwich and Koko Taylor.

    I agree with Adam C.

  4. Mr. Pendergrass would like to have a word with you, Adam.  But he can't ... BECAUSE HE'S DEAD.

  5. I'll offer how to open the broadcast--dark stage--single spotlight.  One of the multi-nominated solo artists (Gaga, Beyonce, Swift would be logical) enters and begins to sing--"I gotta feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good night.  That tonight's gonna be a good good night."  Slowly, other artists join--ideally, this is across the spectrum of types of acts.  They run through the song, and during the last chorus, each group leaves the stage separately, leaving only the Black Eyed Peas there for the final bit.  It's a huge logisitical thing to pull off, but if they could work it?

(Another idea would be for acts to swap songs for the night--have Beyonce do a Taylor Swift song and have Taylor Swift do "Single Ladies" or "Halo," for instance.)

Totally my bad for omitting Teddy.  So he's another strong second place contender; I'm going to lean Mary Travers, though.

    Les Paul. Hands down.

  8. Les Paul may be ineligible as well -- I know that they're doing a special musical tribute to him, so I don't know if he'll be part of the traditional necrology.
